One black and white plate, appendix, bibliography, index. Robert Greville, Lord Brooke (1608 - 1643) was a prominent English nobleman and soldier who played a key role during the early years of the English Civil War. A strong supporter of the Parliamentarian cause, Greville was a Puritan who advocated for religious tolerance and reform. He also had connections to leading intellectuals of his time. Brooke was a key figure in Parliament's opposition to King Charles I and took an active military role in the conflict. He was killed in 1643 during a siege at Lichfield Cathedral, becoming a martyr for the Parliamentary cause. Contents include: Part I: The Life of Lord Brooke : Antecedents and Anticipations, The Public Man Emerges, Noices and Hoarse Disputes, Disputes Become Divisions, Civil War and Peace Negotiations, "Last Weeks Proceedings"; Part II: The Nature of Truth : Renaissance Heritage, the Argument, Sources and Affinities, Contenmporary Perspectives; Part III : A Discourse Opening the Nature of Episcopacy: The Argument, Reason and Scriptiure in Church Polity, The Anti-Episcopal Debate, Indifferency and Toleration; Conclusion. Appendix : Genealogical Charts. [From Preface] Lord Brooke has come into a degree of prominence in recent years as a result of the illuminating research that has been undertaken in the area of the seventeenth century, and specifically into the nature of Puritanism, by such authorities as Arthur Barker, Douglas Bush, William Haller, Perry Miller, A. S. P. Woodhouse, and many others. An individual whose life was itself an embodiment of qualities that made Puritanism a driving force in the shaping of the modern western world, Brooke is an arresting study as a political leader, military commander, philosopher, and anti-prelatical pamphleteer. A biographical and critical investigation of Brooke has long been in order. It is impossible for the student of the seventeenth century to acknowledge even partially his indebtedness to the hosts of scholars who have provided easier access to its portals. I hope that the notes and bibliography will make that indebtedness more evident than a brief prefatory acknowledgment could succeed in doing. Signed by Author.
