Robert Greville, Lord Brooke (1608 - 1643) was a prominent English nobleman and soldier who played a key role during the early years of the English Civil War. A strong supporter of the Parliamentarian cause, Greville was a Puritan who advocated for religious tolerance and reform. He also had connections to leading intellectuals of his time. Brooke was a key figure in Parliament's opposition to King Charles I and took an active military role in the conflict. He was killed in 1643 during a siege at Lichfield Cathedral, becoming a martyr for the Parliamentary cause. A biographical and critical investigation of Brooke has long been in order. It is impossible for the student of the seventeenth century to acknowledge even partially his indebtedness to the hosts of scholars who have provided easier access to its portals.
