Robert John Gibbings (1889 \u0096 1958) was an Irish artist and author who was most noted for his work as a wood engraver and sculptor, and for his books on travel and natural history. Along with Noel Rooke, he was one of the founder members of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920, and was a major influence in the revival of wood engraving in the twentieth century. Top edge gilt, the others uncut. Wood-engraved illustrations by Robert Gibbings and original Greek text set in double column as a border around the English text. pp. [4], 43, [2]. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a couple of very minor scuffs to the spine and a touch of bumping to the foot of the spine and to the bottom corners. The contents with a few spots of faint foxing to the endpapers are otherwise clean and crisp throughout. The Golden Cockerel Press edition of Lucian of Samosata's second-century novella, often regarded as the first known work of science fiction, parodying the outlandish tales of ancient texts such as Homer's Odyssey. Wonderfully embellished with Robert Gibbings' beautiful, dramatic wood engravings which enclose the text, seeming almost to interact with the story itself, the work arguably forms one of his finest illustrative endeavours.
