Aggiungi al carrelloLimited edition, number 268 of 275 copies printed. Folio. Original quarter russet morocco over grey cloth boards by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, the spine with five raised bands and titles in gilt. Top edge gilt, the others uncut. Wood-engraved illustrations by Robert Gibbings and original Greek text set in double column as a border around the English text. pp. [4], 43, [2]. A near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a couple of very minor scuffs to the spine and a touch of bumping to the foot of the spine and to the bottom corners. The contents with a few spots of faint foxing to the endpapers are otherwise clean and crisp throughout. The Golden Cockerel Press edition of Lucian of Samosata's second-century novella, often regarded as the first known work of science fiction, parodying the outlandish tales of ancient texts such as Homer's Odyssey. Wonderfully embellished with Robert Gibbings' beautiful, dramatic wood engravings which enclose the text, seeming almost to interact with the story itself, the work arguably forms one of his finest illustrative endeavours. [Chanticleer 53].
