Bright blue cloth covered boards with blind-stamped double flag illustration on front boards. Spines have gilt-stamped lettering and graphics. Upper edges are gilt. Blue and white end papers with photos of Grant and Lee on the front end-papers and Lincoln and Jefferson Davis on the back end-papers. Book conditions vary from good plus to very good plus. Common points to all volumes: Edges at head and tail of board spines are rubbed and with some degree of fraying. Fore-edge corners are scuffed and/or rubbed. All board panels are lightly soiled to some degree. Board spines may be sunned to some degree. External side and lower page edges are age-toned. Text pages are lightly toned. Text pages are clean. Specific Issues: Vols. 2, 3, and 5 are very good plus. Vol I: Very good minus. Back board panel has several small stains and is a bit grubby. Spine is more sunned. Front and back inside gutters are cracked. Holding but spine is shaken. Vol 4: Very good. Spine is slightly shaken. Vol 6: Very good. Several discolored stains on front board panel. Bump on lower right front fore-edge corner. Vol 7: Very good minus. A few small scrapes on board panels. Spine is more sunned and with water stains. Inside front gutter is cracked but holding. Vol 8: Good plus. Board panels are more faded. Front panel has dark stains next to and on the fore-edge. Spine is more sunned and also with water stains. Inside gutter is cracked at verso to FFEP and half-title page. Vol 9: Very good. Partial gutter crack at Acknowledgment and verso to frontispiece. Vol 10: Very good. Faint stains and discolorations to board panels. Spine is more sunned and also with water stains. Each book weighs almost 4#. Shipping will likely require two boxes. The set consists of: v.1 The Opening Battles; v.2 Two Years of Grim War; v.3 The Decisive Battle; v.4 The Cavalry; v. 5 Forts and Artillery; v.6 The Navies; v. 7 Prisons and Hospitals; v. 8 Soldier Life Secret Service; v. 9 Poetry and Eloquence; and v.10 Armies and Leaders. Blue impressed boards with gold lettering. The boards are clean, bright and unmarked. The interiors are clean, white and appear to be unread. However there is some insect damage to a few pages in the rear of some volumes which is detailed as follows: v. 2 - roughness to the top 1.5" of the fore edge of the last 3 pages; v. 3 - roughness to the top 1.5" of the fore edge of the last 3 pages; v. 4 - roughness to the top 1.5" of the fore edge of the RFEP, roughness to the surface along the top of the RFEP & rear paste down; v. 6 - a small hole at the top of the fore edge of pages 309 - 312 (no text affected), loss to the top fore edge of pages 313 - 322 ranging from 1" - 2" with roughness below and along the top edge (no text affected), roughness and surface wear with small holes to 4" x 4" triangular section of the top corner of the RFEP and along the edge of the rear paste down, and a small closed tear at the top left of the spine; v. 7 - small loss along the edge of the top corner of pages 345 - 352 (no text affected), roughness and surface wear along the top corner of the RFEP and the top edge of the rear paste down; v. 8 - small loss along the edge of the top corner of pages 381 - 382 (no text affected), & following blank pages, roughness and surface wear along the top & bottom corners of the RFEP and the top edge of the rear paste down; and v. 9 - loss along the bottom of the outside column of text of pages 350 - 352 & following page affecting some of the text. All of these issues are cosmetic with the only text being affected is to the last 4 pages of v. 9. Overall a very good or better set. A heavy, oversize set that will require additional postage.
