Do come down and pay us a private call some other time.' The 'points' she makes 'are just the kind of thing we want to know'. Salisbu…ry did not 'go round the Hosue with the visitors, for I did not wish to embarrass the guides; but clearly there is a good deal more organisation needed before our machinery works smoothly'. He responds to a number of points, including one 'about people unlocking cupboards and climbing on stairs', and another about putting 'rather larger labels on the pictures'.

Lady Salisbury is referred to in her husband's entry in the Oxford DNB as 'a buoyant and forceful woman who could share his intellectual interests and encourage and facilitate his career'. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice for postage. Written in a good firm hand. Addressed to 'Dear Miss Faithful…l' and signed 'G Salisbury'. Begins: 'I am afraid the Prime Minister has nothing to do with the coinage & should advize [sic] Mr Faithfull Begg to lay his suggestions before Mr Goschen [Salisbury's Chancellor of the Exchequer between 1887 and 1892] in whose department I fancy the matter lies'. She thanks her for sending 'the interesting extract on Mr Balfour', finding it 'pleasant to think that hard work is still appreciated in England'.

The original piece of paper with signature has been clipped and tipped in on another small beige leaf of paper. Signature reads, "[--?] [truly?]…, Salisbury." No date, circa 1880. Signature on original paper: 3 1/4" x 1 3/4." Backing paper: 5" x 2 1/2." Signature and card are very clean and intact overall but there are a few small stains on the original leaf of paper which slightly affects the signature. A Very Good copy. Original signature of Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury (1803-1903), who served as a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom between 1885 and 1902. He was also known as Lord Robert Cecil before 1865 and Viscount Cranborne from 1865-1868. Signed by Author(s).

Title leaf (with 'Price 1d.') carrying 'Table of Contents' on reverse; followed by three pages of transcripts of letters (paginated 1-3); with the reverse of the final leaf carrying the details of the pamphlet for displa…y on its being folded into a packet. The correspondence relates to the Mission of Cardinal Rampolla, travelling from the Vatican to England to present the Pope's congratulations on the fiftieth anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne. Six letters are transcribed, dating from between May and July of 1887, the authors being Cardinal Howard, the Marquis of Salisbury, Cardinal Rampolla (in Italian, with translation), Queen Victoria and Pope Leo XIII (to the Queen, in French, with translation). Merriman, Archdeacon [Nathaniel James Merriman (4 April 1809 - 15 August 1882) was the third Bishop of Grahamstown from 1871 until his death]. Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury (3 February 1830 - 22 August 1903) was a British statesman and Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom three times for a total of over thirteen years.

First edition hard back binding in publisher's original embossed brick red cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back, lemon end papers. 12mo. 6½ x 4¼. Merriman was educated at Winchester College and Brasenose College, Oxford; and ordained in 1833. He was curate then Vicar of Street, Somerset until he emigrated to Sout…h Africa. He rose to become Archdeacon of Grahamstown, then Dean of Cape Town before being elevated the Episcopate. Conflict arose between Merriman, who was at this time the Bishop of Grahamstown and Frederick Williams, Dean of Grahamstown regarding the status of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa versus the Church of England and the validity of the appointments of bishops. Dean Williams then excluded Bishop Merriman from his Cathedral. This action resulted in many court cases which Williams won. Contains tissue-guarded colour frontispiece of Krelli his wife and counsellor, (iv), 200 pp + 16 pp publisher's catalogue with 2 further tissue-guarded colour plates, hand-coloured fold-out map dated 1850 which shows Durban as 'D'Urban', provinces as 'Amazula', 'Sovereignty Beyond the Orange River', 'Beaufort', 'Clanwilliam', and 'Uitenhage'. SIGNED by the author to Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury and Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister for the United Kingdom three times over a thirteen year period 'To The Lord R, Cecil - with the kind regards of the Bishop of Cape Town'. From Robert Gascoyne-Cecil's private library with family crest to the front paste down, illustrated with a safari hat, six feathered arrows, spiral red and white pole and name beneath 'Robert Gascoyne-Cecil'. Cameo brick red stamp 'Hatfield House Library' (The Hertfordshire Family Estate) to the the title leaf. Member of the P.B.F.A. SOUTH AFRICA (Zuid-Afrika).
