Der Roman verbindet essayistische Reflexion mit erzählerischer Darstellung und untersucht Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Vernunft, Identität und Moral in einer Epoche des Umbruchs; dabei wird die brüchige Ordnung der Habsburgermonarchie zum Symbol für eine umfassende Krise der Moderne.
