Volume 1 features 163 plates with descriptions of the items;…many tipped in colour plates as well as black and white illustrations. Charles Bain Hoyt (1889-1949) was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was the son of Col. James J. Hoyt, a Union Army officer of the Civil War and descendant of the theologian Jonathan Edwards. Hoyt traveled extensively in many parts of the world, particularly in the Orient. He devoted himself to collecting Chinese pottery and porcelain pieces, mostly of the T'ang and Sung dynasties. The Hoyt collection, most of which is housed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, includes Chinese and Korean ceramics, Chinese sculpture and bronzes and metal objects, paintings and prints, and other items. A very valuable reference on Chinese art and antiquities.
