Vom 13. bis zum 16. Jahrhundert gegen die Einfälle von Tartaren, Türken und anderen Angreifern errichtet, besaß früher nahezu jedes… siebenbürgisch-sächsische Dorf eine Wehrkirche, in der die Bevölkerung mitsamt Vieh und Vorräten Schutz fand. Heute sind noch etwa 140 von ihnen erhalten. Die Trutzigkeit ihrer Erscheinung steht in malerischem Gegensatz zur lieblichen Hügellandschaft Siebenbürgens. In der Dorfmitte oder auf einer nahen Anhöhe gelegen geben sie den Dörfern ihren typischen Charakter. Durch die Auswanderung der Siebenbürger Sachsen, insbesondere in den Jahren nach 1990, haben die Kirchenburgen den Großteil ihrer Gemeinden verloren und sind nunmehr vom Verfall bedroht. Gleichzeitig ist ein wachsendes Interesse des Fremdenverkehrs festzustellen und sechs der Wehrkirchen sind bereits in das UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen.
