Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 174 pages with map, tables (one fold out), figures and charts. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8") bound in original publisher's green wrappers. From the library of professor George M Foster. Middle American Research Institute Publication 18. First edition. Contents: Notes and Comments on "Duck-Pots" from Guatemala by Stephen F de Borhegyi; Implications of Radiocarbon Dates from Middle and South America by Robert Wauchope; A Chronological Ordering of the Mesoamerican Pre-Classic by John L Sorenson; Archaeological Remains from the Cintalapa Region, Chiapas, Mexico by Adren R King; Hemispheric Security Reconsidered by Philip B Taylor, Jr; Pre-Columbian Cultural Connections Between Mesoamerica and Ecuador by Stephen F de Borhegyi; Pre-Columbian Cultural Connections Between Mesoamerica and Ecuador: Addenda by Stephen F de Borhegyi; A Developmental Concept of Pre-Spanish Urbanization in the Valley of Mexico by William J Mayer-Oakes. George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. Condition: Foster's stamp to front wrapper. Corners bumped, lightly soiled else a very good copy.

Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. Second Printing [stated]. The format is 4.25 inches by 7.5 inches. viii, 211, [5] pages. Maps. Glossary. Bibliography. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some page discoloration noted. There are several yellow highlighted passages. A Borzoi Book on Latin America. The general editor of the series is Lewis Hanke from the University of Massachusetts. Robert Wauchope (December 10, 1909 January 20, 1979) was an American archaeologist and anthropologist, whose research specialized in the prehistory and archaeology of Latin America, Mesoamerica, and the Southwestern United States. Upon his graduation from Harvard, Wauchope became a professor at the University of Georgia teaching anthropology courses, as well as Southeastern prehistory. He is noted for being the first archaeology professor at the University of Georgia. He also developed and ran the first archaeology laboratory at the university. Once World War II began, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) served with the OSS until the end of the war. Wauchope spent the rest of his professional career at Tulane. Here, he served as the director of the Middle American Research Institute from his first year in 1942 until 1975, officially retiring in 1977. Wauchope taught a multidisciplinary Middle America research program with weekly seminars, working with other Latin America scholars at Tulane. Wauchope was also credited with building a foundation and picking early staff for Tulane University. Tulane University honors Wauchope by having an award in his name. This award is named the Robert Wauchope Award for Excellence in Anthropology. Thanks to the enduring zeal of anthropologists and archeologists there is a vast body of knowledge about the three great civilizations portrayed in this book, another volume in the publisher's lengthening series of Borzoi books on Latin America. During the last twenty years or so historians and ethnohistorians in some numbers have entered the field of pre-Columbian history, and it is to be noted here that in this book the essays of these latter-day specialists balance out in numbers those of the anthropologists. Brought together here are twelve articles covering such diverse subjects as environment, mythology, urbanism, settlement patterns, art history, socio-political organization, and the processes of acculturation between the conquering Spaniards and the conquered Indians. The editor, who put together the definitive Handbook of Middle American Indians, has limited his selections here to the last two centuries before the coming of the Spaniards. He is right in thinking that this chronological coverage will be of most interest to Latin American historians. Wauchope has made an admirable selection, one well-suited to the needs of the classroom and to the interests of the general public. And the scholarship is recentthe oldest article was written in 1946. He does recognize the difficulty of sampling adequately such a great range of cultures through time and space, but his own lengthy introduction is an excellent review of the cultures that preceded those explored in the readings.
