The envelope measures 9.5 x22.5cm, and is folded vertically and is laid on a piece of card that measures 11.5 × 15.5cm. The envelope has a typed address "Lieut. General Sir Leslie Rundle, K.C.B., C.M.G, D.S.O. Commanding Harrismith, O.R.C. [Orange River Colony]." and has been signed by Field Marshal Roberts lower left as 'Roberts, FM'. A handwritten annotation to the front reads "Copy of Lord Roberts' letter to me on his leaving S Africa for England, R [initialled by Rundle]". A further pencil note states this was sent by railway to the staff office. Field Marshal Roberts was a British soldier born in India, he served during the Indian Mutiny, winning the Victoria Cross at Khudagani in 1858. He also served with the Abyssinian Expeditions (1868, 1871-72), the Afghan War of 1878-79, and lead the relief of Kandahar. He assumed the chief command during Second Boer War, relived Kimberley and the advance to Pretoria. He died in France in 1914 whilst visiting the troops in the Great War. Leslie Rundle was a British soldier who served in the Second Boer War and the Great War. He was appointed to the command of the 8th Division of the South African Field Force at about the time of this letter. Condition: An interesting item in good but worn condition, as one would expect an envelope to be (Note, the letter is no longer inside). The top right corner has been snipped off and as mentioned, it has been folded once and stuck down on the left hand side. Roberts' signature is clear, as are Rundle's initials. Signed by Author(s).

The author presents a compelling case for adopting universal military service, arguing that relying solely on a volunteer army is insufficient to protect the nation's interests. Drawing on historical examples and analyzing the contemporary military landscape, the book delves into the complexities of recruiting, training, and maintaining a robust military force. The author meticulously examines the various arguments against universal service, including concerns about its impact on recruiting for the regular army, its potential cost, and its potential to hinder diplomatic efforts. He refutes these arguments, arguing that universal service is not only necessary for national defense but also a vital component of a nation's overall security strategy. The book's insights into the historical and political context of national defense provide a vital framework for understanding the strategic challenges faced by the nation at the time of its publication. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
