Ihre Mutter stirbt früh, so dass hauptsächlich der Vater für ihre Erziehung verantwortlich ist. Als Sophie von Sternheim neunzehn ist, stirbt auch ihr Vater. Sie muss das Landgut ihres Vaters verlassen und in die Hauptstadt D. zu ihrem Onkel und ihrer Tante, Gräfin Löbau, ziehen. Entgegen ihrer natürlichen, tugendhaften Erziehung soll sie die Mätresse des Fürsten werden, da sich ihr Onkel dadurch einen politischen Vorteil erhofft. Sophie soll sich dem Hofe anpassen und sich um ihre Äußerlichkeiten kümmern, anstatt sich zu bilden. Marie Sophie von La Roche geb. Gutermann von Gutershofen (1730-1807) war eine deutsche Schriftstellerin und Salonnière, die in der Zeit der Aufklärung im Stil der Empfindsamkeit schrieb. Sie gilt als erste finanziell unabhängige Berufsschriftstellerin in Deutschland.

Sophie von La Roche, a novelist, was the first German women to make a profession through her published works, She was friends and acquaintances with many renowned writers or her day, including Christoph Martin Wieland (to whom she was once briefly engaged, and who later was to publish her first novel), and Goethe, among others; she was one of the most famous German women in that time. "The History of Lady Sophia Sternheim", her first novel, which was published in 1771, had great success and was quite influential on the romantic writers of the time. In fact this novel was an influence on Goethe, and it could be said that "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (published in 1774) was directly inspired by Sophie von La Roche's novel.
