Our initial motivation for writing this novelette was to expose to the intelligent traveller to India, from Chinese-speaking environments, important cultural themes that are difficult to discover through guidebooks or even from the average tour guide. Our three characters are from China, Northern California, and Taiwan, and each travels to India for different reasons. Each of our characters introduce different themes according to their respective activities and interests. They each represent composites of real people we have known throughout our 30 years of itinerant life together and all three share an enthusiasm for the energy of the country. For the Indian reader, knowledge about these three characters and their stories will provide insights into China, Taiwan and the Chinese diaspora. Whatever region you come from, we hope that you care about our characters and we hope you share our excitement about the great land of India.

This tells the story of six months in the life of a 29-year-old woman from Taiwan, Gao Mei Lin, who returns home from India after having travelled alone, most importantly pursuing her interest in Buddhism. During the next six months of Gao Mei Lin's life, leading up and ending with her 30th birthday party in her home town of Hualien, she wrestles with two major themes. The first theme has to do with Mei Lin's religious or spiritual transformation from "pure" Buddhism to her gradual embrace of a local deity Mazu. Mei Lin's gradual shift toward devotion of Mazu hints at a larger nativist movement afoot in Taiwan-a desire of its population to redefine and celebrate what it means to be Taiwanese. The second theme has to do with Gao Mei Lin's existential question of her future-about whether to find a marriage partner or whether to remain independent. Three young men are attracted to Mei Lin and suggest to the reader questions not only about Gao Mei Lin's future, but for the future of Taiwan more generally. However, that said, this story is a simple one, about a charming young Taiwanese woman and her three suitors. In addition to her anxiety about the future, Gao Mei Lin is a testament to the courteous, creative and enterprising people of the island. Gao Mei Lin's character is as strikingly interesting and magnificent as is the natural beauty of the island.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Admission to U.C. Berkeley. 2. U.C. Berkeley-The first few days. 3. Getting settled: Semester One. 4. Developing relationships at Berkeley. 5. Brenda and Anita. 6. Summer in Cupertino. 7. Brenda and Milton. 8. Year Two at Berkeley. 9. India Research #1: Tanjavur, Ma…durai and Hampi. 10. India Research #2: Writing the Dissertation. 11. Job offer: New Watering Holes. We were first introduced to Brenda Wong and her family in Three Chinese Travellers to India, which Roger R. Hale wrote collaboratively with his wife, Elizabeth Chien-Hale. In the second of three short stories, Brenda Wong is a proud mother, daughter and wife who, along with her husband Milton, is starting a family in Cupertino, California. As a result of Milton's job, the family relocates to Bengaluru, India for three years before returning to Northern California. While in South India, Brenda builds on her interest in architecture by researching temples in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. New Watering Holes is the story of Brenda Wong's decision to pursue a PhD in South Indian Art History at age 30 at U.C. Berkeley; her two children are young and Brenda fails to receive full support and encouragement from her husband and her mother. This story explores three themes: First, it looks at the challenges in maintaining a healthy family while pursing ambitious personal and professional goals. Second, the book grapples with the contradictions surrounding wealth and inequality, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. Political progressives at Berkeley live nearby the economically motivated engineers in Silicon Valley, and yet their beliefs about money and wealth could not be more different. Finally, Brenda's story sheds light on some of the complexity of interpreting culture and cultural artifacts: Who has the right to interpret the culture of others.
