Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the dramatic decline in the number of live poultry assemblers operating in New England over two decades ago, and the subsequent profound changes in the industry's characteristics. It examines the forces that drove this transformation, including the growing dominance of contract growing practices, the shift towards commercial meat chicken production, and the emergence of large-scale country processing plants. The author analyzes the impact of these changes on the assembly system, describing the rise of newer types of assemblers, such as large processors, contract haulers, and contractors, at the expense of smaller, traditional operators. They discuss the increasing importance of volume handling and density in minimizing assembly costs and explore the potential for further efficiency gains through enhanced coordination and structural adjustments. The book highlights the economic pressures that continue to reshape the industry, emphasizing the need for continued reduction in plant numbers and the importance of institutional changes and developments in the distributing function in realizing maximum cost savings. It concludes by underscoring the profound implications of these insights for the future of the poultry industry, offering valuable guidance for assemblers, processors, and policymakers alike. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
