Orig. published in 1917, this is a likely First Printing of that FIRST EDTIION, listing only to Self in front matter & only the original 20 Rover Boys titles in rear. 12mo has medium green cloth over boards with a black & red design & lettering to front & spine. Condition is Fair: heavy rubbing to extremities & bumping to corners & spine tips, with slight loss. Sewn binding is secure, though rear hinge is cracked. Ffep has been excised. The series was popular & made into a series of 12 films, 1949-1955, starring Johnny Sheffield, who had played "Boy" in the original Tarzan films starring Johnny Weissmuller. From 1932, this was book #13 in the original Cupples & Leon printings (the true FIRST EDITIONs), & a true First Printing, listing to self in front matter, in 206 pages with glossy frontispiece by W. S. Rogers (unattributed in book). A 12mo (5" x 7.5") with tan cloth-covered boards stamped with a black design showing Bomba in the jungle to front center, lettered above & below & to spine in black, this book is in Fair condition: generally quite clean, text block strong but rear hinge is cracked. Pages moderately tanned & unmarked save for former owner's information in pen to the "This is my book" box on ffep. Light rubbing to extremities Is quite heavy along spine. Cloth fraying at head and foot of spine and corners where bumped. Front gutter is cracked through, and one or two other places in text block that have slightly cracked; binding feels a bit loose, especially that of first signature. Illustrations by W. A. Rogers throughout. A scarce title in fair reading condition.

Rogers. Condition is VG- (minus): very clean & bright, with the occasional spot, binding strong & straight, hinges intact. Interior pages show modest tanning, commensurate with age. In an attempt by the Stratemeyer Syndicate to cash in on the "Tarzan" fervor sweeping the US in the early decades of the 20th century, they introduced the character of Bomba, a white boy growing up in the jungles of South America (firs…t 10 books) & Africa (later 10 books). The series was popular & made into a series of 12 films, 1949-1955, starring Johnny Sheffield, who had played "Boy" in the original Tarzan films starring Johnny Weissmuller. From 1930, this was book #9 in the original Cupples & Leon printings (the true FIRST EDITIONs), but a Second Printing, listing to book No.10 in front matter. In 204 pages + 4 pages of ads for other children's titles by this publisher in rear. Frontispiece & DJ cover art by W. S. Rogers (unattributed in book). A 12mo (5" x 7.5") with tan cloth-covered boards stamped with a black design showing Bomba in the jungle to front center, lettered above & below & to spine in black, this book is in Near Fine condition: exceptionally clean & crisp, binding strong & straight, hinges secure. Pages moderately tanned (more heavily to endpapers) but completely unmarked. Light, scattered foxing & a hint of corner bumping. The author, Franklin W Dixon, is better known for 'The Hardy Boys' series, but Dixon was a 'house name' of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, in this case masking John William Duffield as actual author. ("Preserve this wrapper" notice prominently printed on both jacket flaps. Reverse side of wrapper contains a valuable long list of Grosset & Dunlap publications for boys and girls.) First edition (this title is at the end of the list of titles on the front jacket flap).

Dust jacket has front panel color illustration of the boys driving yellow car down a hillside cliff road under pouring rain with curving shoreline and lapping waves; chipping at spine ends and at front panel's top left… corner; soiling to white spine and white rear panel; small losses at flap fold ends; front flap lists Hardy Boys series inclusive to "A Figure in Hiding" (first published in 1937) with number codes "5050" at top right and "110-150" at bottom left; rear panel advertisement for Ted Scott Flying Stories with fifteen title list; rear flap ad for Western Stories for Boys and sixteen title list. Light brown boards; dark brown lettering to spine and dark brown lettering and center vignette to front board; minor wear at spine ends and board corners. Blue top edge; light toning and staining to fore-edge and bottom edge with those of latter shallowly affecting some leaves at bottom margins. Scattered light toning and soiling to interior leaves with several at rear having light brown stains although, overall, pages remain clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy in a good+ dust jacket.
