Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the controversial question of whether a person extradited for a specific crime can be tried for another crime committed before the extradition. The author examines international treaties and legal principles to argue that the extradited person cannot be tried for th…e additional crime without the consent of the country that granted the extradition. The author contends that this principle is essential to protect individual rights and uphold the integrity of international agreements. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Issued as part of ICJ's Pleadings, Oral Arguments, and Documents series (Sales number / No de vente: 103). Original gilt-titled burgundy cloth with ICJ seal 18x25cm. Printed by A.W. Sijthoff's Publishing Company, Leyden. 809, (2)pp English and French texts, with several duplicated numberings for… facing texts. Covers very good, slightly sunned to the spine, with surface scratches to the lower board. Interiors near fine, lightly tanned, with "Handbibliothek Referat 500" ink stamp to the half title. In 1901 Iran granted a 60 year oil concession to William Knox D'Arcy, who founded the Anglo-Persian (later Iranian) Oil Company in 1909. Iran unilaterally cancelled the Concession in 1932 over disagreements about royalty payments. After Britain took the case to the League of Nations and Permanent Court of Justice, a new 60 year Concession was agreed in 1933. Iran's continued discontent over royalties compounded by Saudi success in negotiating a 50/50 profit share with Aramco in 1950, ownership, and the treatment of its oil workers led to nationalisation in March 1951, which Prime Minister Mossadegh began to implement. Acting on AIOC's behalf, Britain lodged a formal complaint with the ICJ on 26 May 1951 asking for the Concession to be upheld, and for Iran to pay damages and compensation. Pending its final decision, the ICJ proposed an interim arrangement for AIOC operations to be overseen by a joint board made up of 2 British, 2 Iranian, and 1 third party. Britain agreed, but Iran declined arguing the ICJ had no jurisdiction over the case. In response, Britain complained unsuccessfully to the UN Security Council that Iran was jeopardising world peace. With confrontation escalating, Britain imposed economic sanctions, withdrew AIOC personnel, and reinforced its naval presence in the Gulf, triggering a fall in oil production, and political and economic crises in Iran. Mossadegh faced down sustained domestic opposition from the Shah among others, who on 21 July 1952 asked him to form a new Government. The next day, Mossadegh was boosted by the ICJ's ruling that confirmed Iran's contention that the dispute was outside its jurisdiction. Undeterred, Britain and the US continued to apply pressure on Iran, culminating in Mossadegh's overthrow in August 1953, and the instatement of the Shah. At the ICJ, Iran was first represented by French lawyers who withdrew in response to British pressure, then by Belgian lawyer and socialist politician Henri Rolin. Its delegation included Mossadegh, and Iran's Ambassadors to The Netherlands Hossein Navab and the US Nasrollah Entezam among others. The judges upheld Iran's contention by 9 votes (UK, Iran, Egypt, El Salvador, Uruguay, China, Norway, Poland, Yugoslavia) to 5 (US, France, Canada, Brazil, Chile). This was based on the date of the agreement, and that it was with a company rather than the British Government. This book relates to the final ruling and the steps leading up to it. In 4 Parts, it assembles the documents relating to the application for proceedings and request for interim measures of protection (among the annexes are the 1933 Agreement and 1951 Nationalisation Act); oral proceedings on the interim measures held in public sittings during 30 June - 5 July 1951; other documents submitted to the ICJ; and correspondence. Rare in commerce. (Reference: ICJ website).

Condizione: Fine. This Crucifixion miniature is a masterpiece of mid-fifteenth-century French illumination and one of the most important surviving works by the Master of Jean Rolin II. It once formed part of a Missal commissioned by Cardinal Jean Rolin II (1408-1483), bishop of Autun and son of Nicolas Rolin, the powerful Burgun…dian chancellor and renowned patron of Rogier van der Weyden. Originally, this Crucifixion was paired with a God the Father miniature—now in the Musée Rolin, Autun—forming a canon diptych that introduced the Canon of the Mass. These leaves belonged to one of four luxury Missals made for the Cardinal, three preserved in Autun and one in Lyon, all illuminated by the same master. It is extremely likely that the present leaf, with its own remarkable survival, originated in Autun MS 108A (S.131), alongside the God the Father, St. Andrew, and Adoration of the Magi leaves in the Musée Rolin. The composition unfolds across three registers: the Virgin collapses in Saint John's embrace while Mary Magdalene kneels at the foot of the Cross. On either side, the thieves writhe in agony as Longinus raises his lance. A group of mounted nobles and soldiers occupies the middle ground, beneath a sky where a golden sun and silver moon bear cosmic witness to the Passion. In the distance lies a Burgundian landscape of hills, forests, and towers—perhaps Autun itself. Despite pigment loss, especially in the faces, the confident underdrawing remains visible, revealing the artist's preparatory hand. The miniature is framed by gilded rinceaux of acanthus, fruit, and insects—hallmarks of Parisian luxury illumination. A fragment of a bishop's crozier in the lower margin, identical to that in the God the Father miniature, serves as Cardinal Rolin's personal emblem, confirming the manuscript's illustrious origin. The Master of Jean Rolin II was among the finest illuminators of his generation. His art reflects the deep Flemish influence that defined Burgundian manuscript painting, absorbing the pathos and naturalism of Rogier van der Weyden and the Flemish Primitives. The spatial structure and sculptural modeling recall the work of André d'Ypres and Guillaume Spicre, situating the artist within the cosmopolitan current of Burgundian art where Flemish panel painting, Burgundian sculpture, and Parisian illumination converged. His hand appears in all four Missals for Cardinal Rolin and in deluxe manuscripts such as the Horloge de Sapience (Brussels, KBR IV.1114) and the Hours of Simon de Varie (Getty MS 7 & KB 74 G 37 +a). The Lyon Missal (MS 517) uniquely preserves a Crucifixion and God the Father diptych still in place, confirming the liturgical logic of facing images at the Canon of the Mass and providing a key comparison for the present leaf. Reunited conceptually with its pendant in Autun, this Crucifixion reclaims its place within one of the greatest liturgical projects of fifteenth-century Burgundy. As one of the finest surviving leaves by the Master of Jean Rolin II, it embodies both the grandeur of a princely Missal and the devotional intensity that defined the artistic spirit of its age. Provenance: Commissioned by Cardinal Jean Rolin II (1408-1483); Martin Brimmer (1829-1896), Boston, president of the Museum of Fine Arts; Charles Henry Parker (1860-1948), Boston; Sotheby's, London, 22 June 1982, lot 19; Sotheby's, London, 18 June 1991, lot 21; Les Enluminures, Catalogue 1, #25 (1992); Private Collection, USA.

No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. A mid 15th century illuminated manuscript calendar from a Book of Hours, inscribed in a flowing gothic script, produced in France, Paris, with local saints such as Saint Geneviève (3 Jan., in gold), Saint Denis (9 Oct., in gold), Saint Marcel of Paris (3 Nov.), and Saint Germain of Paris (28 Ma…y). The calendar is complete, bearing all months from January to December, and is written in blue, red, gold, and black ink. Each month bears a two-line initial at the top, against a blue and red background. There are Kalends initials enriched with acanthus infill, and extravagant full borders on every leaf composed of rinceaux with sprays of gold bezants, stylized ivy, and flowering tendrils. Executed around 1450, the stylistic featuresparticularly the gilded ivy borders, palette, and decorative vocabularyclosely reflect the visual idiom developed in the circle of the Master of Jean Rolin II, a leading illuminator in Paris whose influence extended widely among mid-century workshops. The leaves are written in a 17-line format. One illuminated manuscript in octavo (19.1 × 14 cm), 12 leaves on vellum This manuscript is in very good shape, with light, marginal wear and minor loss to the pigments and gold. The quire itself is partially split in half, just holding by a thread between the June and July leaves.
