The fortunes of politicians have often been made and unmade by headlines arising from the latest political poll. This timely book, written simply and filled with anecdotes, sums up what every layman and professional in the field must know to interpret the significance of polls, on and off the political season. Increasingly, we have come to rely on polls to tell us what our neighbors think, how they will vote, and what, therefore, constitutes a realistic candidacy or policy. Cantril served as a key member of the White House staff during the Johnson Administration.
