Neuware - 'Die Mittagsgöttin' ist Wilhelm Bölsches dritter und zugleich letzter Roman. 1891 im Umfeld des Naturalismus erschienen, handelt es sich bei ihm um einen Gegenwartsroman, dessen Schauplätze teils in Berlin, teils im Spreewald angesiedelt sind. Von besonderem Reiz, gerade auch für heutige Leser, s…ind zweifellos die zahlreichen, atmosphärisch dichten Bilder der Stadt, die der Autor detailgetreu eingefangen hat. Der Lichtzauber einer Mitternachtsstunde Unter den Linden, buntes Menschengewühl am Potsdamer Platz, ein Gartenlokal an der Spree: sie alle geben einen sehr lebendigen Eindruck von Berlin um 1890, und es ist gewiß ein lohnendes Unterfangen, die Schauplätze des Romans im heutigen Berlin aufzusuchen, das alte hinter dem neuen Stadtbild aufzuspüren.Bölsche arbeitete an dem Roman in den überaus produktiven Jahren von 1888 bis 1890, und die vielfältigen Aktivitäten jener Zeit haben deutliche Spuren darin hinterlassen: die ästhetischen und weltanschaulichen Diskussionen in den literarischen Zirkeln der Stadt, die Vorträge vor Arbeiterpublikum und die damit einhergehende Auseinandersetzung mit deren Lebensverhältnissen, die Aufnahme naturwissenschaftlicher Studien und nicht zuletzt die besondere Leidenschaft des Autors, mit dem Notizblock in der Hand durch Berlin zu wandern und alle seine Beobachtungen detailgetreu festzuhalten. Auf diese Weise ist ein facettenreicher Zeit- und Berlin-Roman entstanden, der zugleich viel Biographisches enthält.Neben den stimmungsvollen Bildern der Großstadt finden sich ebenso einprägsame Schilderungen des oberen Spreewaldes: das verschlafene Landstädtchen Lübbenau, das von Kanälen durchzogene Dorf Lehde und der geheimnisvolle urwüchsige Wald bei Straupitz. Nur vordergründig folgt der Roman damit der für den Naturalismus typischen Gegenüberstellung von industriell geprägter Großstadt und unverfälschter Natur; bei Bölsche sind die Wertigkeiten anders verteilt. Berlin steht in der 'Mittagsgöttin' für Aufklärung, Rationalität und Fortschritt, der Spreewald dagegen für Mystik, Irrationalismus und Weltflucht. Zwischen diesen Polen verläuft auch die Konfliktlinie des Romans. Ein junger Mann, der sich als Journalist für die Verbreitung wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse engagiert, gerät infolge einer Sinnkrise in den Bann einiger skurril gezeichneter Gestalten, die im Spreewald den wissenschaftlich fundierten Nachweis der Existenz spiritistischer Phänomene erbringen wollen. Natürlich steht der moderne Skeptiker diesem Vorhaben zunächst abwehrend gegenüber, läßt sich dann aber, paradoxerweise durch den wissenschaftlichen Grundsatz objektiver und vorurteilsfreier Beobachtung, immer stärker in dieses Treiben hineinziehen. Am Ende fliegt das Ganze mit einigem Getöse als Schwindel auf, und der Held kehrt geläutert, doch um einige Illusionen ärmer, in die Großstadt zurück.Das heute eher exotisch anmutende Problem des Spiritismus war in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts ein weitverbreitetes Phänomen. Anerkannte Wissenschaftler, in Deutschland etwa der Physiker und Philosoph Gustav Theodor Fechner oder der Professor für Astronomie, Friedrich Zöllner, riskierten ihre akademische Reputation bei dem Versuch, dem Metaphysischen in einer mechanistisch verstandenen Welt wieder Geltung zu verschaffen. Bölsche sieht in diesem Bemühen lediglich eine extreme Ausformung dessen, was er im Untertitel seines Romans als 'Geisteskampf der Gegenwart' bezeichnet. Das neue, auf den Arbeiten Darwins und Taines beruhende Weltbild hatte nicht nur die Anforderungen an die wissenschaftliche Forschung verändert; auch Gesellschaft, Religion, Kunst und Ethik standen auf dem Prüfstand. Der Naturalismus ist aus dieser Umbruchsituation heraus entstanden - Bölsches Roman ist Ausdruck dieser bewegten Jahre und zugleich ein erstes Resümee.
