Met uitsterven bedreigd, is de bij echter ook steeds vaker onderwerp van maatschappelijk debat. Net zo goed is de bij altijd al een bron van inspiratie geweest voor architecten, schrijvers, beeldend kunstenaars en zelfs voor volledige steden. 'The Poetry of the Bee' wordt niet voor niets ingeleid door schrijver en bijenactivist Jeroen Olyslaegers en eert de bij in al zijn bescheiden glorie. Verbeeld door oude meesters en hedendaagse kunstenaars, van Joseph Beuys tot Tomas Libertiny of Jan Fabre. Bewierookt door Nobelprijswinnaar Maurice Maeterlinck. Ook architecten Le Corbusier en Frank Lloyd Wright lieten zich door de bij inspireren en Wolfgang Buttress bouwde zijn kunstwerk 'The Hive' naar analogie met de bijenkorf. Stephane Schraenen en Carla Arocha maken in hun werk dan weer vaak gebruik van repetitieve patronen waarvan de perfecte vormen soms doen denken aan een honingraat. Het boek onderzoekt verder de mythische krachten van de Apis Mellifera en imkers van over de hele wereld laten zien dat een bij veel meer is dan de honing die hij produceert. Verder neemt 'The Poetry of the Bee' je mee naar 'The City of Bees', Manchester, waar bijen worden gehouden op het dak van de kathedraal en waar langdurige werklozen opnieuw aan werk worden geholpen dankzij de bij. Naast kunst, gedichten en fabelachtige verhalen met de bij als ster van de show, brengt 'The Poetry of the Bee' honingzoete beautytips, recepten en het werk van fotografen zoals Stephen Mattues, Diego Franssens, Filip Van Roe en Wout Hendrickx. 0 g.

Debates concerning Rombouts's identity are explored in detail by means of reinterpretation of published archival documents and the discovery of numerous new documents. The publication of the sources, most with full transcriptions, provides a sound basis for the author's arguments supporting the new identification. The remaining oeuvre of the artist, as it is known today, comprises engravings and paintings. This monograph argues for the expansion of Rombouts's oeuvre with some dozen stained-glass windows, roundels and a drawn design for a church window, while suggestions are put forth for other possible attributions. Attention is given to the historical context for Rombouts's activity as a glass painter, and the attributions of these works, none of which are monogrammed, are made by comparing their style with that of works securely attributed to the artist. This section is backed up by numerous illustrations of the windows, many of which are quite inaccessible. Finally, a discussion of archival sources concerning the Louvain confraternity of St Luke and commissions for works of art to local artists in the period covered by the book, form the rich historical background against which Jan Rombouts executed his oeuvre of engravings, paintings, roundels and stained-glass windows. The size, individuality, diversity and craftsmanship of this oeuvre enable us to finally identify and place him securely within the history of south Netherlandish art of his time.

Henricus Jonghen reconstrueert de geschiedenis van de Mariadevotie in Hasselt vanaf de middeleeuwen en onderzoekt de oorsprong en verspreiding van de verering rond het Virga Jesse-beeld. Hij beschrijft uitvoerig de stichting van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekapel, de liturgische praktijken, de jaarlijkse processies en de werking van de broederschap van de Heilige Maria. Daarbij schenkt hij bijzondere aandacht aan de rol van de franciscanen in de bevordering van de Mariacultus en aan de discussie rond de onbevlekte ontvangenis van Maria binnen de contrareformatorische context van de zeventiende eeuw. Het werk bevat daarnaast talrijke beschrijvingen van wonderverhalen, miraculeuze genezingen en votiefpraktijken die verbonden waren met de Hasseltse bedevaart traditie. De moderne editie wordt aangevuld met een uitgebreide wetenschappelijke inleiding over de auteur, de historische context van het werk, de Antwerpse drukker Petrus Bellerus en de kunstenaars Filip Fruytiers en Frederik Bouttats die betrokken waren bij de oorspronkelijke uitgave.
