Cometti provided the illu…strations and Morton the text material, both covering aquatic life and marine plants close to the shoreline, the inhabitantts found on the shore and the vegetation, animals and other life forms in the land fringe, revealing an amazingly diverse environment in a generally narrow strip. Working from north to south the book examines 38 coastal areas in NZ. In addition to their natural history, other aspects iunclude basic geological information, the impact of human activity and the need for coastal protection for one of the country's most treasured gifts of nature. First edition from Hodder and Stoughton of 1985, 163 pages including bibliography, glossary and index, Cometti's colour paintings include one double page spread, 38 full page location images plus more than 200 detail paintings showing different species and varieties of life on the coast, location map with key at front, also a colour geological time scale and other land form diagrams.
