Contains complete interviews with eighteen slaves, plus selections from the reminiscences of fifty further slaves. During the 1930's the last former slaves were disappearing from the American scene. These men and women were the last living witnesses to slavery in the United States, and this was the final opportunity to learn from them what slavery was really, intimately like. Field workers of the Federal Writers' Project were dispatched to ask them about plantation life, etc.

The reader who is unfamiliar with the rural South, or too young to have experienced the joys of a pre-1940 Georgia youth, will find this book to be a collection of the oral traditions which have almost disappeared. Georgia's rapid development into an industrialized society has made this publication of the folklore papers collected by the Georgia Writers' Project 1936-1940 all the more important. - Inside flap.
