Superstar Pharaohs was the exhibition presented by the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, in partnership with MUCEM (Marseille), in 2022, the year that marks the centenary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter and the bicentenary of the deciphering of hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion.The exhibition catalogue includes an introductory text written by the co-curator Frédéric Mougenot, in which he reveals the reflections that led him to create the exhibition.The introduction is followed by six essays on different themes, ranging from antiquity to the present day: Fayza Haikal writes about the link between modern day Egyptians and the civilisation of the Pharaohs; Bernard Mathieu focuses on the Egyptians' knowledge of their history; Michael Chaveau looks at the presence of the Pharaohs in Greco-Roman literature; Simon Connor explores the impact of images and their destruction in constructing the history of the Egyptian monarchy; Jean-Marcel Humbert discusses the phenomenon of Egyptomania; and João Carvalho Dias, co-curator of the exhibition and deputy director of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, reveals the relationship that Calouste Gulbenkian developed with Howard Carter, which was fundamental in establishing the Egyptian art section of the Gulbenkian collection.The rest of the publication is, like the exhibition, divided into three sections: the first, 'Three Thousand Years of History and a Few Memorable Reigns', seeks to outline the profile of the Pharaohs who were regarded, in their time, as worthy of being remembered for posterity. The second section, 'What Remains of the Pharaohs? History and Legends', looks at the way the memory of some of these figures was recovered, and at the same time transformed, by the literature of Greco-Roman antiquity, giving rise to myths that survived for centuries. Autour de la figure de Taharqa, le plus célèbre d'entre eux, le Louvre organise une exposition spectaculaire. Au VIIIe siècle avant notre ère, le pays de Kouch, en Nubie et au-delà, longtemps dominé par l'Egypte, reprend son indépendance. Sa capitale religieuse et politique se situe à Napata, dans la région de la quatrième cataracte du Nil. Nous sommes au coeur du Soudan actuel. Nous disposons aujourd hui d un corpus d une cinquantaine de ces tableaux, complets ou fragmentaires. Ils sont contemporains des portraits de momies dits «du Fayoum», et autant qu on puisse en juger, ont été peints au IIe siècle de notre ère. Ces tableaux sont précieux pour l'histoire de l art car ils offrent un témoignage exceptionnel sur la peinture de chevalet telle qu'elle était pratiquée dans le monde grécoromain, et dont nous percevons l importance grâce aux sources littéraires classiques (Pline l'Ancien en particulier) consacrées aux chefs-d'oeuvre des grands maîtres disparus. Du point de vue de l'archéologie égyptienne, ils nous renseignent sur des changements profonds dans la forme donnée aux cultes et aux rituels des temples, puisque ces tableaux fonctionnent à la manière d'icônes. Ils montrent également et surtout peut-être comment une religion aussi ancienne que la religion égyptienne, et aux codes de représentation aussi contraignants que le canon pharaonique, a finalement pu accepter que l hellénisme vienne changer radicalement l iconographie trois fois millénaire de ses dieux, transformant Sobek de profil et à tête de saurien en un personnage barbu tenant son crocodile sur les genoux, tel Zeus son foudre. Pour la première fois, ce corpus est présenté ici de manière raisonnée, avec photographie couleur et fac-similé (Henri Choimet), ainsi qu'une description puis une analyse iconographiques. C'est ainsi que plusieurs panthéons se dessinent, celui de l'antique Égypte côtoyant désormais celui des dieux du monde gréco romain ou encore celui de divinités adorées par une nation (les Arabès des textes grecs ?) installée sur son territoire. La Fin de Méroé est bien connue en Nubie, par les tombes royales de Qoustoul et Ballana, et par les fouilles de capitales à Faras et au Gebel Adda. Pour documenter la période dans la région de Méroé même, la Section française a sondé en 1987-1990 les monuments du site d'el-Hobagi. Des sept grands tumulus à sépultures souveraines, tous enclos d'un mur d'enceinte très original, deux ont été fouillés. Chaque tombe procure un armement exceptionnel, emblématique de la royauté méroïtique. On compte aussi une série étonnante de récipients en bronze gravés de motifs ou de scènes et ayant servi au culte. L'un d'eux porte l'inscription en hiéroglyphes la plus tardive de l'Empire (REM 1222). La datation du matériel et le radiocarbone situent el-Hobagi au ive siècle, au début, donc de l'époque charnière du transfert de la capitale vers Soba. Le cimetière d'el-Hobagi est postérieur au cimetière nord des qore de Méroé, et contemporain à la fois des dernières pyramides du cimetière ouest et des cimetières Garstang 400 et 500. Y est soulignée la persistance d'un État méroïtique dans le Soudan central, quand la Nubie fait sécession. L'interprétation ne permet pas d'affirmer qu'el-Hobagi succède à Méroé ; pour autant, par leurs rites funéraires, les personnages enterrés là peut-être des ethnarques Noba comparables aux rois Nobades de Nubie affirment leur appartenance à l'Empire méroïtique.…
