His passion for music began with piano lessons inspired by a local church harmonium player. As a teenager, he accompanied the amateur coloured opera group "Eoan" in Cape Town before moving to Europe to advance his studies. His career took off in 1972 when he was appointed to assist conductor Nello Santi at the Zurich Opera House. Jephtas gained a reputation as a vocal coach in Italian opera, thriving in Switzerland's liberal environment that allowed him to express his sexuality. He collaborated with opera legends like Renata Tebaldi, Plácido Domingo, Montserrat Caballé, and Luciano Pavarotti. Despite his international acclaim, Jephtas struggled with a deep desire for acceptance in South Africa, where his talent was overshadowed by the racial hierarchy. An offer to become an "honorary white" only deepened his internal conflict. His success in the USA was marred by personal hardships, culminating in his death in New York in 1992. This book explores Jephtas's life and career through letters to May Abrahamse, a coloured singer from his youth, revealing the profound impact of apartheid on his psyche and his experiences as a gifted South African navigating race and sexuality during the AIDS epidemic.

Aggiungi al carrellopaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Race, politics, and opera production during apartheid South Africa intersect in this historiographic work on the Eoan Group, a "coloured" cultural organization that performed opera in the Cape. The La Traviata Affair charts Eoan's opera activities from the group's inception in 1933 until the cessation of their productions by 1980. It explores larger questions of complicity, compromise, and compliance; of assimilation, appropriation, and race; and of "European art music" in situations of "non-European" dispossession and disenfranchisement. Performing under the auspices of apartheid, the group's unquestioned acceptance of and commitment to the art of opera could not redeem it from the entanglements that came with the political compromises it made. Uncovering a rich trove of primary source materials, Hilde Roos presents here for the first time the story of one of the premier cultural agencies of apartheid South Africa.
