Summary: "The author explains the action of young Tobias in the painting of the Aremberg collection of about 1636, as an operation for cataract. Rembrandt was inspired by the lutheran Bible-translation, where Old Tobias is said to be blind by a cataract. The translation is false, the greek original speeks of levkoma, a sickness of the skin of the eye, but Rembrandt stuck to Luther, and, as the conscientious realist he was, studied cataract operations probably in the clinic of the famous Dutch oculist Jacob van Meeren, a pupil of Dr Tulp, the head figure of Rembrandt's Anatomy of 1632. The author will develop the analysis of the spiritual expression of the painting in a following article".
