Full title: THE A B C AND X Y Z OF BEE CULTURE. A CYCLOPEDIA OF EVERYTHING PERTAINING TO THE CARE OF THE HONEYBEE: BEES, HIVES, HONEY, IMPLEMENTS, HONEY PLANTS, ETC. FACTS GLEANED FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF THOUSANDS OF BEEKEEPERS, AND AFTERWARD VERIFIED BY THE AUTHORS. Front bord subtitle: "The A.I. Root Bee Library." 1929 printing ("213th Thousand" as stated upon title page; first published 1877 per OCLC). [16], 815 pages. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15.25cm. No dust jacket. Original dark boards; stamped lettering and centerpiece stamped honeybee vignette decorate front board; slender scuffing at edges and along board joints. Text block edges well toned with some foxing and small stains. front pastedown has two-line ink ownership inscription "Ben Burney Jr. | 1935." along with circa 1950s-1970s personal bookplate of daughter Marilyn B. Thompson [Marilyn Ruth Burney Thompson]. Strong foxing/toning to endpapers; small dark stain at top spine corners if several initial leaves; two lines of pencil notes on rear free endpaper verso; some foxing/toning to interior leaves. First and last quires slightly pulled; short splitting to surface paper at top of front hinge but binding remains firm. Double-column text with b/w photographs and illustrations throughout. A good copy of one of the classic apiology titles. *** Additionally laid-in a front endpapers is an original single-sided paper label, H 5 3/16 inches x L 6 1/4 inches, titled NOTHING IS BETTER FOR BREAKFAST THAN HOT CAKES AND HONEY GUARANTEED PURE AND FREE FROM BITTER-WEED BY BEN BURNEY, JR. CRYSTAL SPRINGS, MISS. Presumably intended to be applied to a box or jar but unused in that regard with some soiling/toning, faint creasing at bottom, and shallow wear along right margin. Label is printed in yellow, red, and black; bee and flower illustration on left with wooden hive body box and flower illustration on right. No date specified but probably circa 1930-1950. There is a Crystal Springs, Mississippi cemetery record for a Ben I. Burney [Ben Ike Burney] (1902-1993) whose dates overlap the label's estimated time frame. Online research regarding the Burney honey-apiary operation turns up nothing nor does an independent search of the Mississippi Secretary of State and Department of Agriculture archives. However a small and relatively local honeybee operation in 1930s-1940s rural Copiah County could have easily escaped government business/tax registration or agricultural inspection/certification. Depression-era agriculture product labels for central Mississippi - an area characterized by modest family farms and not the multi-thousand acre plantations of the state's Mississippi River region - are quite uncommon and are an interesting niche within the field of collectible advertising.
