P. to the "Wells Literary and Scientific Institution" in 1842. Subsequently purchased by H. W. Livett in 1895 and presented to the Wells Museum on dissolution of the society. Purchased from Wells Museum in 1965 by Arthur Seton and more recently gifted to Bath University in 1972 where is stayed until 2021 when it was withdrawn. The only ownership marks are a embossed "Wells Museum, Wells Somerset to upper corners of first three pages and two stamps from Bath university showing the gift in 1972 and its withdraw in 2021. Richard Blakemore M. P. (1775-1855), ironmaster and politician. Through his uncle ironmaster John Partridge, Blakemore became a partner with Harford, Partridge and Company, a notable ironmaster firm in South Wales. He assumed management of the Melingriffith Tin Plate Works in Whitchurch at the end of the 18th century. Eventually, he became sole owner of the works, and was directing its management as late as 1838. He also owned the Pentyrch ironworks. He was a contemporary of the ironmasters Richard Crawshay and Richard Hill. Blakemore was born in Darlaston, Stafford, England in 1775. He was the elder son of Thomas Blakemore (d. 1808), of Littleton Hall, West Bromwich and Darlaston. His mother was Anne (d. 1838), daughter of ironmaster John Partridge (1704-1791), of Ross-on-Wye. His mothers three brothers, John (1732-1810), Richard (1736-1778), and William (1739-1820), were all ironmasters; John, of Harford, Partridge and Company, assisted most in Blakemores ironmaster career. His sister Ann married Rev. Luke Booker, vicar of Dudley, and an author of poetry and other publications. Mary, Esther, and Jane were the other sisters. Blakemore held seats at The Leys and Velindre House. His other holdings included the Hadnock estate, purchased in 1822, after which he demolished the original house, and used the materials to rebuild and extend The Leys property on the other side of the River Wye. He constructed a trestle-work iron tower, 70 feet (21 m) high, as an observatory at the deer park of The Doward, Whitchurch. Unmarried, Blakemore adopted his nephew, Thomas William Booker, and raised him at Melingriffith Tin Plate Works. Blakemore is buried at the family tombs located at All Hallows Church, Whitchurch. He was survived by his nephew, T. W. Booker, who added Blakemore to his surname, took over the management of Melingriffith, and became Member of Parliament for Herefordshire. Dr. Henry William Livett (1814-1901), surgeon, artist, engraver, justice of the peace and Freemason. Medical education from St Bartholomews, became M. R. C. S. and L. S. A. in 1837 and commenced practice in Wells in 1838 and continued almost up to his death. Medical Officer to the workhouse and other local charities. Took great interest in entomology, botany and music. BOOK RESUME: The Encyclopædia Metropolitana was a 19th-century English-language Encyclopedia published in London from 1817 to 1845. It was designed as a systematic and topical reference work, rather than an alphabetical one, aiming to cover all sciences and arts in their natural order. Key figures involved in its creation and publication included Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edward Smedley, and the Rose brothers. Initially conceived in 1817 to compete with the Encyclopædia Britannica and, in particular, to counter its perceived secular tone. Coleridge developed a system of arrangement for the articles, later refined by the publisher, dividing the topics into five classes: pure sciences, mixed and applied sciences, biographical and historical information, miscellaneous and lexicographical information, and an analytical index.
