THE SHERWOOD ANDERSON READER, selections compiled and edited by Paul Rosenfeld, inscribed by Eleanor Anderson (Sherwood's widow), hardcover, first edition and first printing per publisher's custom of printing first edition year on title page as well as copyright page, 1947. IT…EM CONDITION: good. The text block is in near fine condition, with no dog ears or marks, but a small tear at top of page 463. The spine is lightly cracked by copyright page. There is no bookplate of a prior owner, but the gift inscription is on the first free endpaper. Not a library book or remainder. The cream-colored cloth boards are in fairly good condition (bumped spine, which is somewhat discolored, shelf wear, bumped corners). 8 1/4 x 5 ¾, 850 pages, 29 ounces. XX Selections of Anderson's magazine articles, short stories, poetry, essays and memoirs, including WINESBURG, OHIO; THE TRIUMPH OF THE EGG; HORSES AND MEN, MEMOIRS, PERHAPS WOMEN, and PUZZLED AMERICA. XX [From Wikipedia] Sherwood Anderson (September 13, 1876 - March 8, 1941) was an American novelist and short story writer, known for subjective and self-revealing works. Self-educated, he rose to become a successful copywriter and business owner in Cleveland and Elyria, Ohio. In 1912, Anderson had a nervous breakdown that led him to abandon his business and family to become a writer. At the time, he moved to Chicago and was eventually married three additional times. His most enduring work is the short-story sequence WINESBURG, OHIO, which launched his career. Throughout the 1920s, Anderson published several short story collections, novels, memoirs, books of essays, and a book of poetry. Though his books sold reasonably well, his only bestseller was DARK LAUGHTER (1925), a novel inspired by Anderson's time in New Orleans during the 1920s.
