Aggiungi al carrelloSome marking and browning particularly to spines overall just about VG set in publishers decorated wrappers. Notable for it's publication of extracts from Burroughs' Naked Lunch which led to 400 copies of the first issue being impounded. Rosenthal and Carroll sued the Post Office in the District Court of Chicago, where Judge Julius Hoffman ruled it not obscene. The Magazine was a major influence in modern American literature. As Thomas Pynchon described it, what happened at Chicago became shorthand for some unimaginable subversive threat among literature students at Cornell University. Rosenthal left after the first issue of the magazine, while Carroll continued for the duration of its publication. ISBN B000X64D5Y.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition. Inscribed first issue ofBig Tablecontaining "Ten Episodes from Naked Lunch" which was published by Irving Rosenthal after he left the Chicago Review due to censorship by the University. A lovely association, this copy signed for legendary Greenwich Village book dealer who owned Greenwich Books and the Rare Book Room, Roger Richards. Greenwich books was a haven for the Beats and other literary figures in midcentury New York. Richards was close with Burroughs, Corso, Ginsberg, and was a regular at Andy Warhol's Factory. The story behind this inscription, from the third party for whom it was intended, was: Richards met Burroughs at the Chelsea Hotel, where he was living, to have a few items inscribed for a longtime client. The two old friends ended up hanging out and decided to get stoned. The first item,Big Table, was mistakenly inscribed to Richards before Burroughs got it right for the others. An iconic piece of Beat Generation history with a nice association from someone who had a large hand in it. . 8vo, 152, [6]pp. Signed and inscribed by Burroughs to Roger Richards at the Hotel Chelsea, N.Y. on pg 79. Publisher's red, blue, and white wrappers, spine slightly cocked and showing a few spots of soiling. Very good or better. Laid in is a Rare Book Room, Greenwich catalogue from Richards.…

Aggiungi al carrello88 pp [vi. pages of ads]. 8vo. 88 pp [vi. pages of ads]. 8vo. A classic Beat Generation era issue containing an early selection from William Burroughs's Naked Lunch. The 1958 appearance of a Naked Lunch excerpt in the Chicago Review created a scandal that ended in the resignation of the magazine's two editors, Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll. The controversy was initiated when an editorial review by Chicago Daily News columnist Jack Mabley appeared under the title 'Filthy Writing on the Midway.' Mabley objected to what he called obscene writing in the University of Chicago's literary magazine. The resulting furor, including the refusal of the U.S. Post Office to mail Paul Carroll's subsequent magazine, Big Table, led to the immediate publication of Naked Lunch by Maurice Girodias of the Paris-based Olympia Press, who had created a similar sensation by publishing Nabokov's Lolita. Published alongside Burroughs in the Chicago Review were Lawrence Ferlinghetti, two letters by Allen Ginsberg that mention Jack Kerouac and Gregory Corso, Jack Kerouac, prose by Philip Whalen, and other young and unconventional writers of the time. Irving Rosenthal went on to write one of the great but unheralded novels of the era, 'Sheeper,' in which Burroughs and the Beats appear. Illustrated card wrappers with rubbing and chipping along spine, light crease to top corner on cover and slight bump to bottom corner; else very good. Signed in black ink by William Burroughs on page 3 beneath his name. Signed.…
