Aggiungi al carrello8vo. Original printed wrappers. First edition of this infamous first issue of Big Table founded after editors Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll resigned from The Chicago Review in protest to harsh criticisms of their printing portions of the then-unpublished novel Naked Lunch by William S. Burrough. This first issue of Big Table, founded in the wake of this episode, was impounded by the U.S. Post Office. A court trial resulted in its favor, and the journal continued through another 5 issues. Rosenthal's novel Sheeper is a classic of the era, and one of the great minor novels of American literature. See Clay & Phillips, A Secret Location on the Lower East Side, p. 45. Slightly leaned, some pale staining to wrappers. …

Aggiungi al carrello8vo. 88 pages. Printed wrappers. Containing chapter two of 'Naked Lunch.' This was the second appearance of any section of the novel in print, following the Spring issue of the journal. For those keeping track, the headline above the text contains the misprint "William C. Burroughs." "The 1958 appearance of a Naked Lunch excerpt in the Chicago Review created a scandal that ended in the resignation of the magazine's two editors, Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll. The controversy was initiated when an editorial review by Chicago Daily News columnist Jack Mabley, appeared under the title 'Filthy Writing on the Midway.' Mabley objected to what he called "'obscene' writing in the University of Chicago's literary magazine. Published alongside Burroughs in the Chicago Review were Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and other young and unconventional writers of the period" (Columbia University exhibition). Rosenthal went on to write one of the great (woefully unheralded) novels of the era, 'Sheeper,' in which Burroughs and the Beats appear. Some light wear and toning at extremities, a few spots on cover, but a very good copy.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, first printing On Christmas Day 1958, co-editors from the University of Chicago, Irving Rosenthal and Paul Carroll founded the highly influential Big Table. Rosenthal edited the premiere issue which we are offering here along with Issues No. 2 and No. 4. Only five issues in all and these three are offered here as a set. The first issue published the then highly controversial "Naked Lunch" by Burroughs (in excerpts) and Jack Kerouac's "Old Angel Midnight" which were originally to be published in The Chicago Review. The US Post office impounded over 400 copies and refused to deliver the first issue because of what they called "obscenity and filthy contents". That decision was appealed by none other than Judge Julius Hoffman of the later Chicago Eight trial fame, reversing the initial decision and stating that Big Table was not obscene. Paul Carroll took over the helm and edited the next four issues from 1959 to 1960. Big Table published works by John Ashbery, Robert Creeley, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg ,LeRoi Jones, Denise Levertov andmany others. Legend has it Jack Kerouac gave the name "Big Table" to the editors. The issues are very good to near fine wraps with the usual toning of the acidic paper stock.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. A complete run of the Beat literary magazine, founded in response to the suppression for reasons of "obscenity" of The Chicago Review's Winter 1958 issue. These copies have been signed a whopping 33 times by a Who's Who of the contributors and prominent figures associated with the Beat and Black Mountain schools of poetry/lit. From the collection of Joe Lee, who clearly made it his mission to meet the leading lights of the period and get their autographs over a number of years. The first issue is signed by William S. Burroughs (at a lengthy excerpt of his shot across the bow Naked Lunch, poets Robert Creeley and Denise Levertov (on ads at the rear), and folksingers Odetta and Peggy Seeger. The second issue is signed by Allen Ginsberg (dated 11/84), David Meltzer, Amiri Baraka (known as LeRoi Jones at the time; dated 11/98), artist Jules Feiffer, and poet/publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti on the rear wrap. The third issue is signed by poets Ginsberg (dated 6/12/94), Baraka, Creeley, John Ashbery; chronicler of the gay experience John Rechy, Feiffer, and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Norman Mailer. The fourth issue signed by comedian Steve Allen on an ad for his album at the front, Ginsberg (dated 6/12/94), Levertov (on her poem "The Rainwalkers"), Creeley, Diane DiPrima, Meltzer, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, Ashbery, and Baraka (dated 11/98). The fifth and final issue signed by Creeley, Ashbery, John Updike, Meltzer, Rechy, and Odetta (dated 3-14 '98). Ted Joans's signature is somewhere in one of these issues too; memory fails which one. All volumes Very Good or slightly better, typical age toning and some light wear, bindings a little strained. A remarkable collection of signatures of major figures in the Beat movement, the folk scene, and the Black Mountain school, with some up-and-coming novelists like Updike and Mailer thrown in; all of which together with Big Table itself really capture the zeitgeist of the late '50s and early '60s. Signed.…
