Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. Softcover book in FINE condition. 5.25 x 7 in. / 112 pgs / illustrated throughout. Actual book is pictured. See images provided. Tight binding. All pages clean without any markings, notations, or folds. Text in English and Spanish. The rich sepia tone of a photograph by Luis González Palma (born 1957) is unmistakable: he colors his prints by hand but always leaves the whites of his portrait subject's eyes untinted to elicit a disconcerting but penetrating gaze. Working from Guatemala City since the 1980s, and exhibiting internationally since about 1989, Palma has made his long-term project the documentation of his country's indigenous Mayan population, which governmental policy has ferociously repressed during the last half-century. Often collaged with symbols and objects, Palma's pictures act as records of a population for whom violence and mysticism coexist. Colloquia, a more recent project, gathers portraits of Guatemalan artists as part of a larger effort to establish a museum for contemporary Guatemalan art. PHotoBolsillo's introduction to Palma's work surveys over two decades of his highly romantic and politically urgent photography.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Since 1999, the Guatemalan performance artist Regina Josà Galindo (born 1974) has drawn attention to her native country's oppression of women and the poor by activating her body as a site for collective inscription. Several of her performances are extreme exercises in the deprivation of dignity: she has been publicly stunned with an electroshock gun and "cleansed" with a power hose; she once commissioned a plastic surgeon to locate the imperfections on her naked body in public with a marker. In Guatemala, these actions are not so easily assigned to the symbolic realm: in a 2005 interview Galindo said, "As Guatemalans, we know how to decipher any image of pain, because we have seen it all up close." This volume surveys all of Regina Josà Galindo's works in performance and video from 2006 to 2010.…
