Ha ricevuto il nome di semantica generativa quella linea di ricerca che, nel più ampio quadro della teoria linguistica generativo-trasformazionale, si è allontanata dal modello teorico codificato, a metà degli anni sessanta, negli Aspetti della teoria… della sintassi di Chomsky, venendo ad assumere una. fisionomia autonoma particolarmente riguardo alle relazioni che i vari aspetti del linguaggio hanno tra loro e al ruolo che tra questi occupa il significato. A dispetto del nome, la semantica generativa ambiva ad essere una teoria completa del linguaggio, nei suoi aspetti sintattico, semantico, pragmatico e fonologico. Ad essa va riconosciuto il merito di aver iniziato una riflessione sistematica sulle relazioni tra l'aspetto più strettamente sintattico della lingua e la forma logica degli enunciati, ampliando la base empirica della ricerca e contribuendo sensibilmente all'approfondimento concettuale della teoria linguistica nei suoi sviluppi attuali. I saggi scelti a formare il volume documentano le fasi principali dell'evoluzione interna della teoria sino al suo epilogo attorno agli anni 1973-74. L'introduzione delinea il quadro generale in cui i saggi si situano e dà un'idea della genesi e della natura della proposta semantico-generativa, tentando anche una prima valutazione critica degli innegabili contributi che tale indirizzo ha dato al dibattito teorico linguistico di quest'ultimo decennio, sia in senso positivo, costruttivo, sia in senso negativo, mostrando, cioè, a quali conclusioni inaccettabili certi assunti di base conducevano se spinti fino alle estreme conseguenze.
