This book examines the operations of the Lands Department in the province of British Columbia during the early 20th Century and analyzes the themes, ideas, and reforms proposed and enacted by the author during his tenure in office. The text reviews policies surrounding land ownership, sale, and use, with an emphasis on making British Columbia an attractive destination for intending settlers at a time when its growth was beginning to accelerate due to the development of rail and road connections. The book describes the author's efforts to open up surveyed lands for homestead pre-emption free of charge, improving mapping and information available to settlers, and laying the groundwork for new strategies to improve agriculture and land use such as water conservation and dryland farming. Throughout the book, the author offers insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the development of British Columbia during a time of transition, and his work provides valuable perspective into the competing interests and considerations that shaped the province's land use policies. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a historical account of British Columbiaâs forestry policy. The author examines the evolution of the provinceâs forest management practices from the early days of the lumber industry to the present day, focusing on the tension between economic development and environmental conservation. The book traces the development of the provinceâs forest policy from its beginnings in the late 19th century, when the government was primarily concerned with promoting economic growth through the exploitation of natural resources, to the present day, when the government is increasingly focused on protecting the environment and ensuring the sustainability of the forest industry. The author argues that the provinceâs forest policy has been shaped by a number of factors, including the influence of the lumber industry, the changing values of society, and the development of new scientific knowledge about forest ecology. The book provides a valuable overview of the history of forest policy in British Columbia and offers insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the province as it seeks to balance economic development with environmental protection.
