BOOK RESUME: Romanesque Art in Belgium is a comprehensive survey of the architectural and monumental heritage of the Low Countries, with a significant emphasis on the Mosan style of the Meuse Valley. Spanning 125 pages, this unabridged English edition traces the development of Belgian Romanesque from its Carolingian influences through to its peak in the 12th century. The text provides a forensic analysis of structural elements, including early vaulted ambulatories and alternating supports in abbey architecture. Illustrated throughout by Roubiers masterful plates, the work is housed in a red cloth binding featuring a striking gilt-blocked architectural motif. Unlike the 111-page general trade release, this privately printed issue preserves the total scholarly narrative as originally intended by the authors. AUTHOR: Masterly collaboration between the French photographer Jean (Jacques) Roubier and the scholar André Courtens. Roubier was a celebrated documentarian of European architectural heritage, renowned for his technical precision and his ability to capture the 'soul' of monumental stone through light and shadow. His photography in this edition required a specialised large-format printing process to maintain its clarity. André Courtens, a preeminent medievalist, provided the rigorous historical framework; the additional 14 pages present in this limited edition likely contain his expanded 'Critical Notes' and site-specific analyses which were edited out of later trade versions. Together, they produced the definitive mid-century visual archive of the Belgian Romanesque style.
