Roy Hora toma distancia de esas perspectivas simplistas, y explica la historia económica del largo siglo XIX en toda su complejidad. Su trabajo analiza los tres ciclos productivos (el del cuero, el de la lana, y el de las carnes refinadas y los granos) que signaron la expansión exportadora, examinando las características del mercado internacional, las estructuras de comercialización y el marco político e institucional en el que debieron desenvolverse.
