Este trabajo trata de revisar el proceso de asistencia y tratamiento de los enfermos afectados con rabia o hidrofobia en la provincia de Ourense en los últimos años del siglo XIX, y primeros años del XX. Fue un período inmediatamente posterior al descubrimiento de la vacuna contra la rabia, que llevó a cabo el doctor. Louis Pasteur en Francia en 1885. Antes de la vacuna antirrábica, casi todas las personas que se infectaban de rabia fallecían. Fueron unas décadas en que la higiene pública se vio transformada por la floreciente institucionalización de la microbiología y la medicina de laboratorio, convirtiéndose la bacteriología en el nuevo fundamento científico de la higiene pública y sentándose las bases de la epidemiología contemporánea. El libro profundiza en la historia de la llegada del suero y vacuna antirrábica a Galicia, centrándonos en Ourense. Analiza las relaciones entre el Instituto Pasteur de París, y los personajes e instituciones ourensanas, tanto públicas como privadas, que fueron pioneros en su administración desde finales de siglo XIX y primeras décadas del XX. Destacan en la ciudad el Sanatorio Quirúrgico y el Instituto Antirrábico (de los doctores Lino Porto y Francisco J. Rionegro) o el Laboratorio Municipal de Ourense (dirigido por el farmacéutico José Fernández). En los datos encontrados en esta investigación se deduce que, en torno a principios de 1902 ya se administraba la vacuna antirrábica en Ourense en el Instituto Antirrábico de los doctores Rionegro y Porto. Con ello se evitaba el traslado y desplazamiento de enfermos afectados por hidrofobia al Instituto Cobián en Pontevedra o al Instituto Ferrán en Barcelona y a París al Instituto Pasteur para ser atendidos. Estos desplazamientos fueron a veces financiados o subvencionados por la diputación o el ayuntamiento. Desde 1910, la apertura del laboratorio municipal de Ourense supondrá un refuerzo en las campañas vacunales de todo tipo, incluida la antirrábica. Dicha labor preventiva se verá de nuevo potenciada por el Instituto Provincial de Higiene que comienza a funcionar en torno a mediados de los años 20. Asimismo, a lo largo de ese período otros establecimientos y gabinetes privados van ofertando tratamientos antirrábicos desde el inicio de la década de 1920. Es un trabajo que utiliza fuentes de archivo (Archivo Municipal de Ourense /AMOU), Archivo Histórico Provincial de Ourense/AHPOU) y Arquivo Dixital de Galicia) y numerosas fuentes hemerográficas en papel o digitalizadas (entre ellas El Heraldo Gallego, Álbum Literario, El Eco de Orense, El Miño, o el Boletín Oficial de la provincia de Ourense. Aunque hoy en día la rabia ya no es una enfermedad endémica en España, sigue siendo una amenaza para muchas personas. La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) afirma que la rabia existe en más de 150 países y territorios, a pesar de ser una enfermedad viral prevenible mediante vacunación. Actualmente, la principal estrategia de prevención de la rabia recae en tener una amplia cobertura vacunal de los animales domésticos y silvestres. La rabia sigue siendo un problema de salud global aún sin resolver en 2025, y que es un objetivo de la OMS a través del programa «One Health».
