Paperback. Condizione: New. 1st ed. 2022. This monograph studies decompositions of the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve, induced by the action of a finite group, into a product of abelian subvarieties. The authors give a general theorem on how to decompose the Jacobian which works in many cases and apply it for several groups, as for groups of small order and some series of groups. In many cases, these components are given by Prym varieties of pairs of subcovers. As a consequence, new proofs are obtained for the classical bigonal and trigonal constructions which have the advantage to generalize to more general situations. Several isogenies between Prym varieties also result.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. The book is part biography and part collection of mathematical essays that gives the reader a perspective on the evolution of an interesting mathematical life. It is all about Lipman Bers, a giant in the mathematical world who lived in turbulent and exciting times. It captures the essence of his mathematics, a development and transition from applied mathematics to complex analysis - quasiconformal mappings and moduli of Riemann surfaces - and the essence of his personality, a progression from a young revolutionary refugee to an elder statesman in the world of mathematics and a fighter for global human rights and the end of political torture. The book contains autobiographical material and short reprints of his work. The main content is in the exposition of his research contributions, sometimes with novel points of view, by students, grand-students, and colleagues. The research described was fundamental to the growth of a central part of 20th century mathematics that, now in the 21st century, is in a healthy state with much current interest and activity. The addition of personal recollections, professional tributes, and photographs yields a picture of a man, his personal and professional family, and his time.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is intended for a graduate course in complex analysis, where the main focus is the theory of complex-valued functions of a single complex variable. This theory is a prerequisite for the study of many areas of mathematics, including the theory of several finitely and infinitely many complex variables, hyperbolic geometry, two- and three-manifolds, and number theory. Complex analysis has connections and applications to many other subjects in mathematics and to other sciences. Thus this material will also be of interest to computer scientists, physicists, and engineers. The book covers most, if not all, of the material contained in Lipman Bers's courses on first year complex analysis. In addition, topics of current interest, such as zeros of holomorphic functions and the connection between hyperbolic geometry and complex analysis, are explored. In addition to many new exercises, this second edition introduces a variety of new and interesting topics. New features include a section on Bers's theorem on isomorphisms between rings of holomorphic functions on plane domains; necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a bounded analytic function on the disc with prescribed zeros; sections on subharmonic functions and Perron's principle; and a section on the ring of holomorphic functions on a plane domain. There are three new appendices: the first is a contribution by Ranjan Roy on the history of complex analysis, the second contains background material on exterior differential calculus, and the third appendix includes an alternate approach to the Cauchy theory.…
