    Decorative Silk. Condizione: Very Good. Illustrated (illustratore). First Edition. Volume VIII. A.D. 1438-1516. Bright orange silk with elaborate decoration in gilt. Top edge gilt. 400 pp. Engraved frontispiece vignette. Binding a facsimile of an original in the British Museum, executed by about 1710 by Antoine Michel Padeloup, Royal Binder of both France and Portugal. He presented it to Francoise Marie de Bourbon, daughter of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, on the anniversary of her marriage to Philippe, Duke of Orleans, who afterward became Regent of France. Part of limited edition (limitation/numbering only in Volume I, but it is 752/1000). Spine faded, fade marks and chip to rear board, spine cloth dry and chipped at top. Internals clean and crisp, sound hinges. Very good.

Publishers' original bright red cloth bindings elaborately decorated in gilt, with gilt lettering to spines and blind-stamped designs to rear boards. Contents include Leif Erikson's discovery of America, one of the earliest European explorations of the North American continent, presented within the broader narrative of medieval and early world history. Volume III, "The Great Events of the Great War," is bound in an authorized facsimile of the official British copy of the Treaty of Versailles signed by King George V and deposited in the British archives.
