Mit den ersten litera…rischen Arbeiten trat er, damals noch Bankangestellter, in den frühen dreißiger Jahren an die Öffentlichkeit ? heute hat sein Name in der polnischen Literatur einen guten Klang. Rudnickis Talent, die Dinge unter der Haut aufzuspüren, subtilste seelische Vorgänge literarisch umzusetzen, fiel schon in den Jugendwerken ins Auge. Nach der schweren Zeit der Okkupation und des Krieges, die Rudnicki ? Pole und Sohn jüdischer Eltern, Widerstandskämpfer und Teilnehmer am Warschauer Aufstand ? bis zum bitteren Ende auskosten mußte, wurde er zum ?Schriftsteller des Gewissens": In den Erzählungszyklen ?Shakespeare" und ?Die Flucht aus Jasnaja Poljana" und der auch deutsch erschienenen Novellensammlung ?Das lebende und das tote Meer" berichtet er von den Schrecken jener Epoche, vom Leiden und Sterben des jüdischen Volkes. Aber auch die Liebe und ?ihre hundert Formen" ist ein Thema, das den Dichter nicht losläßt und das ? variiert ? in seinem Schaffen immer wiederkehrt. Eine Liebe ohne Widerhall, ohne passenden Partner ist es, die das Mädchen Noemi fast in den Tod treibt. Über ein Jahr hat sie mit Kamillo zusammen gelebt, da schlägt er ihr die Trennung vor. Ein qualvolles Auf und Ab beginnt: Kamillo greift zu Ausflüchten und Listen, um Noemis Liebe zu entgehen; Noemi ist jedes Mittel recht, um Kamillo an sich zu ketten. Während in dieser frühen, 1937 veröffentlichten, danach verfilmten und in viele Sprachen übersetzten Novelle die Liebenden durch ihre Leiden noch ?über das Weltgeschehen" gestellt werden, geht Rudnicki in der wesentlich später entstandenen ?Reinen Strömung" einen Schritt weiter. Die Jüdin Amelia trifft nach dem Krieg, nach den entwürdigenden Jahren im Ghetto, die sie nur durch ein Wunder überstanden hat, im verwüsteten Warschau ihren Ehemann Abel wieder. Belastet mit ihren Erlebnissen und Erfahrungen, lehnt sie einen neuen gemeinsamen Anfang ab. Sie will Abel nicht nur einen trüben Abglanz ihrer einstigen Empfindungen bieten. Hier hat ?das Weltgeschehen" mit harter Hand in ein Schicksal eingegriffen ? große Gefühle sind hinfällig geworden. Dennoch wird die Erinnerung an glücklichere Tage bewahrt, bleibt die menschliche Würde erhalten.
