Rudolf von Jhering (18181892) war ein deutscher Rechtswissenschaftler. Er hatte großen Einfluss auf das deutsche Privatrecht. Bedeutung erlangte Jhering für die juristische Methodenlehre. Auf ihn geht die wortlautgetreue sogenannte Begriffsjurisprudenz zurück, eine Bezeichnung, die er selbst schöpfte. Später besann er sich um und wandte sich der historischen Auslegungsmethode der Interessenjurisprudenz zu. Im Rahmen seiner Untersuchungen zu den vorvertraglichen Rechtsverhältnissen entwickelte er außerdem die Rechtsfigur der culpa in contrahendo.
