Condizione: Like New. Like new center staple bound paperback. Rusted staples along the spine. 4to. (8 x 10 x 0.5 inches) Clean text free of marks or underlining. Japanese tissue paper endpapers. Includes black and white photos on glossy paper, chronology of Japanese Art, and a catalogue of the exhibition. 55 pp. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. An exhibition devoted to the art of Japan must of necessity be limited in both its breadth and its depth. Recent dating by radioactive isotopes indicates that the Japanese were producing ceramics as early as 25,000 B.C. so the time span of their art is enormous. Furthermore, throughout their history Japanese artists have been prolific and since art has always been highly prized, a great many ancient works survive. Selecting as we have less than ninety examples of this art means that we have skimmed ever so lightly over the surface. We have avoided whole areas of material, including not a single woodblock print, nothing of sword furniture or embellishments, no ancient bronze implements, and no recent painting or sculpture. Problems of fragility have eliminated the works of certain outstanding masters and have made it difficult to borrow examples illustrative of a special style or a distinctive technique.
