During the War of 1812, he was contracted by General Dearborn, to bake 2,000 barrels of flour into bread for the troops at Cayuga, New York. He built a large bakery at great expense, working day and night, but the building, ovens and utensils were destroyed by a fire. He then marched with the troops to Fort Niagara and built another bakery which was ordered destroyed by General M'Clure who wanted to deny the British of its use. To make matters worse, George S. Walton, an agent for the baker was captured by the British with money, utensils, books and papers that belonged to the baker. Shoemaker 18719 [War of 1812] [Eaton Claims vs. United States].
