Extrait stricto sensu détaché d'un volume du Dictionnaire de Médecine. Il n'y a pas eu de tirage à part. Cet "article" constitue un véritable mémoire, l'un des premiers sur le sujet. Il est beaucoup plus complet que celui rédigé par Rullier dans la première édition (1821) de ce dictionnaire (cette première version ne comportait que 11 pages 1/3 et était dépourvue de bibliographie). AN EARLY AND RARE TEXT ON STUTTERING. Ce mémoire, très remarqué bien que n'ayant paru qu'au sein d'un volumineux dictionnaire encyclopédique, comporte des données novatrices et a notamment influencé Colombat (de l'Isère) qui parle "d'excellent article" et de" théorie ingénieuse". Rullier commence par donner une définition du bégaiement, en indiquant que celui-ci doit être distingué du balbutiement qui est "regardé à tort comme une de ses variétés." Puis il divise son mémoire en deux parties : 1°). Caractères, mécanisme, et causes du bégaiement ; 2°). Traitement du bégaiement. On trouve in fine une bibliographie rédigée par "DEZ." (J.E. Dezeimeris, bibliothécaire de la Faculté de médecine de Paris). Pierre-Joseph Rullier, reçu à l'internat des hôpitaux de Paris en 1805, devint chef de clinique, collaborateur de Dupuytren, puis agrégé en clinique externe le 2 février 1823 (sans concours). Il exerça la médecine au Bureau central, puis à Bicêtre, avant de devenir chef de service à la Charité. Il fut membre de l'Académie de médecine. Il décéda en 1837.
