Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: Very Good. 2nd Edition. At the turn of the century, Littig & Company commissioned the accomplished artist Richard Rummell (1848-1924) to create watercolors of some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copper-plates were engraved and a limited number of pulls (engravings) were… distributed. This aerial of Lafayette is large, in color, and was issued circa 1976. Unlike other college views of the period, the Rummell plates are glorious panoramic views of the entire campus. Art historians speculate that since the views appear to be drawn from an altitude of about 300 ft., it is likely that the artist worked from a balloon. Arader Galleries has commissioned a master printer to pull a limited number of restrikes from these original copper-plates of college views. Printed on heavy wove paper, t . Displaying 750 of 1916 characters. Richard Rummell (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Excellent. 20.25 x 30.5 in, paper size. Signed in pencil. Size 16 x 29 Inches. A scarce 1906 proof printing of the first-edition bird's-eye view of Yale University, drawn by Richard Rummell and signed by the same in pencil in the lower right corner. It was published by F. D. Nichols of Boston. This is not only Rummel…l's first university view, it is the first printing of such - copyrighted to Nichols and printed by Elson, thus predating Rummell's contract with Littig. A Closer Look The view is centered on Osborne Hall (now demolished and replaced with Bingham Hall) with its distinctive chapel-like façade. Chapel Street runs in front of the Hall and Temple Street can be seen running northward towards East Rock. Many of the extant buildings of the historic Old Campus, including Connecticut Hall (1752), are easily recognizable. Welch Hall and Lawrence Hall stand alongside College Street, across from the New Haven Green, which is complete with the three chapels that still stand: United Church on the Green (Congregational, 1814), Center Church (Congregational, 1812), and Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green (1816). In the distance, the heights of East Rock, with its distinctive Soldiers and Sailors Monument, are recognizable. Rummell University Views Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. In 1906, Rummell issued his first university view - an illustration of Yale (as here). That view was a sepia tone photogravure copyrighted by F. D. Nichols of Boston and printed by A. W. Elson of Boston. A view of Harvard, likely Rummell's second view, also appeared in 1906 with the same Nicholson/Elson imprint. Subsequently, Littig and Company of New York commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of many of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copperplates were engraved, and both photogravures and lithographs were issued. The photogravures tend to have a much lower survival rate than the lithographed images, which were printed on heavier paper. Most of Rummell's university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the entire campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting that Rummell most likely worked from a balloon. Rummell's First University View? Of Rummell university views, the Yale and Harvard views are particular both in format and printing style. Unlike many Rummell university views, these early views appear in two formats, a sepia-toned photogravure copyrighted by F. D. Nichols of Boston and the lithograph view issued by Littig in New York. It is likely that the photogravure is earlier, as it often lacks a title (as here). These and other oddities suggest that the Yale view was the first university view Rummell published, and Harvard the second. Being a Brooklynite, Yale would have been one of the nearest and easiest universities to focus on as a prototype for the series. Of all Rummell's university views, it is further noteworthy that the Nichols / Elson / Rummell Yale view is one of the rarest to the market. In more recent times, many of the original lithographic plates for Rummell's college views have been rediscovered, leading to multiple modern reprints of the Littig editions, but the original lithograph printings and especially the photogravures, as here, have become extremely rare. Signed by Author(s).

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. 1st Edition. Very Good. Overall toning. Size 16.5 x 29 Inches. This is a scarce, 1910 Richard Rummell view of Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The sepia coloring of this print is consistent with other first editions of Rummell's views. The presence both of the Littig imprint and also Rummell's hand signa…ture reinforces the assessment of this as a first edition. Moreover, the presence of only tracings of the view's title, just discernible in the bottom margin, indicates that it is likely a proof. Dickinson College's Historic Main Campus Founded in 1773 as Carlisle Grammar School, Dickinson would become in 1783 the first college to be founded after the formation of the United States - and at its foundation, the furthest west of any college in the country. The view is centered on the park at the juncture of West High Street and North West Street. Although the College has grown over the intervening century, this view of Dickinson's main campus displays Denny Hall, Old West and East College, and the Tome Scientific Building (renamed in 2001 the Stern Center). Also shown is Bosler Hall, prior to its midcentury renovations. Despite several college closings in its history, Dickinson remains active. Famous alumni include James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States; Roger Brooke Taney, the 5th chief justice of the United States; and Henry Clarke, developer of the Klondike Bar. Rummell University Views Rummell was an American landscape artist known for his drawings of American universities. At the turn of the century, Littig and Company commissioned Rummell to prepare watercolors of some of the nation's most prestigious colleges. From these watercolors, copper-plates were engraved, and a limited number of engravings were issued. Most of Rummell's university views are strikingly similar in style, revealing the campus in panoramic splendor. The views are uniformly issued from an altitude of about 300 feet, suggesting the Rummell most likely worked from a balloon. Although modern restrikes of Rummell's college views taken from the original printing plates can be found, the original printings have become extremely rare - particularly proof states such as this. We find no examples of the Dickinson College view in OCLC.

Aggiungi al carrelloLithograph. Condizione: Fine. Lithograph. Modern framed with dark cherry wood, brushed gold trim, cream matte border. Full piece measures 20.5" x 33.5". Faint toning along upper edge of lithograph, otherwise a fine example. Richard Rummell (1848-1921) was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts in London before immigrating to the U…nited States. His campus illustrations, often created using copperplate etching, were commissioned by the New York firm, Littig & Company, between 1890 and 1915. He produced over 40 detailed campus views, including Michigan, Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia. Rummell's works are notable for their meticulous detail and his technique of rendering bird's-eye views, as it required both artistic skill and an understanding of architectural design. This work includes the following landmarks at the University of Michigan: Detroit Observatory, Old Haven Hall, University Hall, Tappan Hall, Alumni Memorial Hall, the President's House and Newberry Hall. The University of Michigan by Richard Rummell, the hand-colored lithograph commissioned by Littig & Company in 1907. This aerial view depicts State Street, through the central campus of the University of Michigan. (illustratore).
