Folio (37.6 x 28.5 cm); title, colour title, 72, [2] pp. 8 colour plates tipped-in on thicker board including two portraits, 7 black and white plates, some half-page, with many illustrations in text; one plate loose. Original publisher's cloth, double-headed eagle centrepiece to upper cover, spine lettered in gilt; rubbed at extremities, ends of spine chipped, some spotting to upper cover. Internally fresh example of the first edition of this richly illustrated work, published again in 1916 and 1917. It details and illustrates a military exhibition held in the St. Petersburg Admiralty during the summer 1915. Its aim was to instil a patriotic spirit and encourage support for Russia's involvement in WWI, whilst also relaying the realities of the terrible conditions. The exhibition was a great success and attracted nearly half a million visitors in its opening weeks.
