Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Original publisher's blue paper wrappers. Black lettering and small illustration on front cover. 7 1/4" x 10 1/4." Unpaginated, c. fifteen pages, complete. Twelve black-and-white illustrations, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, faint offsetting from the original printed ink, and a few tiny spots of discoloration. Covers are clean and intact overall but have a dampstain on front near fore-edge, slight bumping and chipping along corners and edges, and fading and offsetting on front, back, and spine (parts of the covers are now beige). A Very Good copy. This is Number 43 in the University of Washington Chapbooks series edited by Glenn Hughes. This chapbook features twelve black-and-white illustrations of twelve woodcuts designed by printmaker Prescott Chaplin. The illustrations herein are not original prints. Chaplin's woodcuts depicted in the illustrations show people and scenery of Mexico and aspects of Mexican culture. The woodcuts are titled as follows: "El Cargador," "La Cosecha," "The Potter," "Los Soldados," "Gandy Dancers," "El Juego," "El Vendedor de Agua Miel," "Desert Trees," "Los Trabajadores," "Los Curas," "Maguey," and "La Pelea de Gallos." In his Foreword, Rupert Hughes commends Chaplin for his woodcuts and artistry. According to Hughes, Chaplin has the notable ability of bringing depth of "color" into the black ink of his prints. Most of the artworks featured herein use a significant amount of black ink to suggest different forms and figures and a sense of perspective in the foreground, middleground, and background.
