How they carry us straight to the days of chivalry, to the witchcraft of Merlin,…to the wonderful deeds of Lancelot and Perceval and Galahad, to the Quest for the Holy Grail, to all that "glorious company, the flower of men," as Tennyson has called the king and his companions! Down through the ages the stories have come to us, one of the few great romances which, like the tales of Homer, are as fresh and vivid to-day as when men first recited them in court and camp and cottage. Other great kings and paladins are lost in the dim shadows of long-past centuries, but Arthur still reigns in Camelot and his knights still ride forth to seek the Grail. Still, there are no verified histories or even legacy poems that document all of the people, actions, relationships, or ideals of the historical people described. The author, Rupert S. Holland, builds from an impressive collection of poems and legends to build a rousing tale of the life of King Arthur in 15 chapters (see introduction.) In our opinion, perhaps the best compilation up to 1920. xviii + 360. The illustrator, Lancelot Speed (1860-1931) was a coastal painter and a British illustrator of books in the Victorian era, usually of a fantastical or romantic nature. He is probably best known for his illustrations for Andrew Lang's fairy story books. Speed was heavily involved with the silent films industry and named as animator of several silent films. The frontispiece, same as jacket cover, is the only illustration in the book. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Hardcover has blue cloth boards with gold lettering & design impressed into front cover and spine. Price clipped DJ is good, has 2 large chips stabilized with tape, and lists 22 titles in Grosset & Dunlap's "Famous Tales of Adventure" series on rear. Copyright 1919 was not by Grosset & Dunlap. No information about this copy's printing or publication found. Unclear where, when & under what conditions this edition was published. We accept the 1938 date used by other sellers of this title by this publisher as a reasonable estimate of either the printing and/or publication date. No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR. Thanks for looking.
