Häufig fanden solche literarischen Stoffe weite Verbreitung über Musikdramen und Balladen und waren so nicht nur dem Gebildeten, sondern auch der einfachen Bevölkerung bekannt. Andere häufig behandelte Sujets umfassen Kinderdarstellungen, Szenen des häuslichen Lebens, Garten- und Landschaftsszenerien oder Darstellungen glücksverheißender Gegenstände. Die Frauendarstellungen werfen ein Licht auf den Wandel der Stellung der Frau im China an der Schwelle zur Moderne.
