The common matter of the three Synoptists, being (for the first time in the history of Biblical criticism [with note on H. van Voorst's Dutch work of 1855-56]) made clearly prominent and separable from all context, affords the reader an opportunity of considering its language, style and contents, and of judging how far it may be taken by itself out of its triple framework and yet remain an intelligible picture. Hence the reader has altogether new facilities for discussing the probability or improbability of the supposition that this Triple Tradition is the nearest approximation we possess to some Original Greek Tradition whence our three Synoptic Gospels have been directly or indirectly derived. St. Mark's version, which stands in the left-hand column, apart from other considerations, seemed best fitted by its brevity to be adopted as the standard. It has therefore been printed at full length without deviation from its order; those parts alone of St. Matthew and St. Luke being inserted which are parallel to the narrative of St. Mark.
