The organization is comprised of history enthusiasts, scholars, authors, and individuals with a keen interest in Western American history. Members often refer to themselves as "Westerners." Local chapters of THE WESTERNERS are known as "Corrals," and each Corral operates independently while adhering to the overarching mission of the organization. The Chicago Corral is one of the oldest and most active. "The Westerners Brand Book" includes a variety of articles, essays, historical research, book reviews, and sometimes personal anecdotes related to the American West. Contributions are typically made by members of the Corral and other invited experts.
