Soft cover. Condizione: Good. This is "Masterpieces of American Wit", being a selection of short pieces of humorous prose and verse. It is Little Blue Book no. 960, published by E. Haldeman - Julius. The use of one staple for the binding, and the picture of Mr. E. Haldeman - Julius tells us that this is a reprint of the original 1925 edition, that was issued circa 1947 . There is also a small Union label at the bottom of the rear cover. The selections are from fairly well-known American humorists. Some of them were well-known in their day, but have sadly been forgotten by the modern world. CONTENTS : ** JAMES BAYARD TAYLOR : Selections from the Experiences of A. C. Palabras Grandiosas ** C. F. LUMMIS : A Poem of Passion ** SAM WALTER FOSS : A Modern Martyrdom; The Prayer of Cyrus Brown ** IRWIN RUSSELL : The Origin of the Banjo ** "BILL" Nye : A Fatal Thirst; On Cyclones; How to Hunt the Fox; The Garden Hose ** EUGENE FIELD : Baked Beans and Culture ** GERGE T. GENERAL LITTLE BLUE BOOK CONDITIONs : Pocket Series and Little Blue Books were issued using inexpensive materials and thus are almost always found with toned and faded paper. Other small defects such as slightly chipped corners, printer's smudges, and such are common. Any flaws beyond the normal for these will be detailed. Little Blue Books often did not have blue covers - or the blue has faded to gray. Please remember that vintage paper items are more fragile than their modern counterparts, and thus require proper care in handling. THIS COPY -- GOOD ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable. Weathering and light abrasion along the spine, small surface loss to top of spine; staple is corroded; front and rear covers are somewhat splotchy color-wise, and there is slight chipping to edges, as well a wee bit of staining at bottom front edge, and a small tear to top front edge - else clean with solid binding - no writing. and unmarked.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A Night at the Gardens examines the history of hockey through the experiences of spectators at the famed Maple Leaf Gardens. When Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens opened in 1931, manager Conn Smythe envisioned an arena that would project an aura of middle-class respectability. In A Night at the Gardens, Russell Field shares how this new arena anticipated spectators by examining varying spectator behaviours, who the spectators were, and what the experience of spectating was like. Drawing on archival records, the book explores the neighbourhood in which Maple Leaf Gardens was situated, the design of the arena's interior spaces, and the ways in which it was operated in order to appeal to respectable spectators at a particular intersection of class and gender. Examining a ticket ledger compiled by arena staff for the 1933-34 National Hockey League season, the book reveals that the average subscriber purchased more than two tickets, suggesting that attending hockey games was a social experience. It also shows that while ticket subscribers were overwhelmingly middle-class men, women were also present. Oral history interviews with twenty-one former spectators at the Maple Leaf Gardens detail the experience of watching the spectacle that unfolded on the ice during each hockey game. A Night at the Gardens tells the fascinating story of how one prominent public building became such an important part of Toronto society. Spanning several lands - Turtle Island, the US, Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand and Kenya - the authors demonstrate the two sharp edges of sport in the history of colonialism. Colonizers used sport, their own and Indigenous recreational activities they appropriated, as part of the process of dispossession of land and culture. Indigenous mascots and team names, hockey at residential schools, lacrosse and many other examples show the subjugating force of sport. Yet, Indigenous Peoples used sport, playing their own games and those of the colonizers, including hockey, horse racing and fishing, and subverting colonial sport rules as liberation from colonialism. This collection stands apart from recent publications in the area of sport with its focus on Indigenous Peoples, sport and decolonization, as well as in imagining a new way forward.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Every four years, the Winter Olympics become a focal point for activism and resistance. But in the modern era, mere bids to host the Games have sparked fierce opposition from groups motivated by local or global concerns. Russell Field edits a collection that charts the evolution of protest around the Winter Games and illuminates the issues at the heart of anti-Olympic activism. The essays collectively explore the shifting dynamics and power relations between the civic coalitions that pursue the Winter Olympics and the social movements that oppose their efforts. The contributors look at specific Games impacted by dissent and probe the issues that swirled around failed and withdrawn bids. In addition, contributions on the contemporary Olympics describe current or future bids while delving into the campaigns demanding host nations pay attention to economic, social, humanitarian, and environmental concerns. A first-of-its-kind collection, Winters of Discontent profiles the wide range of activists and social movements that have organized against the Winter Olympics.
