It was the greatest shipping point on any inland waterway in the Southwest. It was the center of wealth in a pioneer country and was the warehouse for merchants for as far west as Dallas. On January 19, 1877, a young couple came to this restless and thriving city. They registered at the Brooks House as A. Monroe and wife. They were a handsome couple and she wore many large genuine diamonds. Her name was Bessie; and the natives after seeing her diamonds, named her "Diamond Bessie." On Sunday after their arrival, they were seen walking across the bayou bridge on the Marshall Road. He returned alone. Two days later he left town and two weeks later she was found in the woods with a bullet in her head. He was traced to Cincinnati, and it was found that his name was Rothschild, the son of a wealthy jeweler. He was brought back to Jefferson and indicted for murder. The case was one to excite much publicity, a young man named Rothschild charged with the murder of a beautiful young woman, and the case was, in fact, one of Texas' big name cases. Over the next four years, the finest legal talent of Texas duel over whether he was guilty. Once he was sentenced to be hanged, but this trial was reversed by the Appellate Court; and finally a jury said "not guilty".
