Tutsi, il a subi dans sa jeunesse trois exils, avant d'être contraint à vivre loin des siens au Burundi. Ses parents et trois de ses frères et soeurs ont été massacrés lors du génocide de 1994. S'il ne peut oublier le passé, il refuse de vivre dans l'idée de vengeance. Ce livre est le témoignage d'un homme exceptionnel qui réconcilie écologie et humanisme.Né en 1955 au Rwanda, Eugène Rutagarama a suivi une formation de biologie et d'écologie. Il travaille depuis près de trente ans dans les parcs nationaux à la conservation de la pour la protection de l'environnement. Il a été nommé en 2003 directeur du Programme international de conservation des gorilles.
